| | N J Dawood (2014) rendition of Surah Smoke, The Evident Smoke(ad-Dukhan) --- |
---|
44:1 | | ῌā‘ mīm |
44:2 | | By the veritable Book |
44:3 | | We revealed it¹ on a blessed night, intending to give warning |
44:4 | | on a night when every wise commandment was expounde |
44:5 | | as a commandment from Ourself |
44:6 | | We it was who sent it down as a blessing from your Lord: surely He it is who hears all and knows all |
44:7 | | the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them. Mark this, if you are true believers |
44:8 | | There is no god but Him. He ordains life and death; He is your God, and the God of your forefathers |
44:9 | | Yet they divert themselves with doubts |
44:10 | | Watch for the day when the sky will pour down palpable smoke |
44:11 | | enveloping mankind: a woeful scourge |
44:12 | | Then will they say: ‘Lord, lift the scourge from us. We are now believers.&lsquo |
44:13 | | But how will their remembrance help them, when a true apostle did come to the |
44:14 | | and they denied him, and said: ‘A well taught madman!&lsquo |
44:15 | | Yet if We but slightly ease your torment, you will return to unbelief |
44:16 | | On the day We bring down the supreme scourge. We will surely be avenged |
44:17 | | Before them, We tested Pharaoh‘s people. A gracious apostle had come to them |
44:18 | | saying: ‘Hand over to me God‘s servants. I am an honest emissary |
44:19 | | And do not hold yourselves above God. I bring you clear authority |
44:20 | | I adjure you by Him who is my Lord and your Lord not to stone me |
44:21 | | If you have no faith in me, leave me well alone.&lsquo |
44:22 | | Then he cried out to his Lord, saying: ‘Surely these are a sinful people.&lsquo |
44:23 | | Set forth with My servants in the night, for you will be pursued |
44:24 | | Leave the sea at rest behind you. They are warriors doomed to be drowned.&lsquo |
44:25 | | How many gardens and fountains they left behind them |
44:26 | | Cornfields, and noble palaces |
44:27 | | and good things in which they took delight |
44:28 | | All this We gave to others to inherit |
44:29 | | Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they reprieved |
44:30 | | We saved the Israelites from the degrading scourge |
44:31 | | from Pharaoh, who surely was a tyrant and a transgressor |
44:32 | | and chose them knowingly above the nations |
44:33 | | We showed them such miracles as manifestly tested them |
44:34 | | Yet there are those who say |
44:35 | | We shall die but one death, nor shall we ever be raised to life again |
44:36 | | Bring back to us our forefathers, if what you say be true.&lsquo |
44:37 | | Are they better than the people of Tubba‘¹ and those who thrived before them? We destroyed them all, for they too were wicked men |
44:38 | | It was not in jest that We created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them. |
44:39 | | We created them both only to reveal the Truth. But of this the larger part of them have no knowledge |
44:40 | | The Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all |
44:41 | | On that day no friend shall help a friend; none shall be helpe |
44:42 | | save those to whom God shows mercy. He is the Mighty One, the Compassionate |
44:43 | | The Zaqqūm tre |
44:44 | | shall provide the sinner‘s food |
44:45 | | Like dregs of oil |
44:46 | | like scalding water, it shall simmer in his belly |
44:47 | | Seize him and drag him into the depths of Hell |
44:48 | | Then pour out the scourge of scalding water over his head: |
44:49 | | "Taste this, you illustrious and honourable man |
44:50 | | This is the very fate you always doubted."&lsquo |
44:51 | | Surely the righteous shall be lodged in a mansion secur |
44:52 | | amid gardens and fountains face to face |
44:53 | | arrayed in rich silks and fine brocade |
44:54 | | Even thus; and We shall wed them to dark-eyed houris |
44:55 | | Secure against all ills, they shall call for every kind of fruit |
44:56 | | and, having died once, they shall never die again. Your Lord will in His mercy shield them from the scourge of Hell |
44:57 | | That will be the supreme triumph |
44:58 | | We have made it easy in your own tongue, that they may remember |
44:59 | | Wait, then; they too are waiting |
