| | Edward Henry Palmer rendition of Surah Smoke, The Evident Smoke(ad-Dukhan) --- |
---|
44:1 | | 'H. M |
44:2 | | By the perspicuous Book |
44:3 | | verily, we have sent it down on a blessed night;- verily, we had given warning |
44:4 | | wherein is decided every wise affair |
44:5 | | as an order from us. Verily, we were sending (apostles) |
44:6 | | a mercy from thy Lord; verily, He both hears and knows |
44:7 | | from the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between the two, if ye were but sure |
44:8 | | There is no god but He, He quickens and He kills - your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore |
44:9 | | Nay, they in doubt do play |
44:10 | | But expect thou the day when the heaven shall bring obvious smok |
44:11 | | to cover men - this is grievous torment |
44:12 | | Our Lord! remove from us the torment; verily, we are believers |
44:13 | | How can they have the reminder (now), when they have had a plain apostle |
44:14 | | and when they turned their backs away from him and said, 'Taught! mad! |
44:15 | | Verily, we will remove the torment a little, (but) ye will surely return |
44:16 | | On the day when we will assault with the great assault, verily, we will take vengeance |
44:17 | | And we already tried the people of Pharaoh when there came to them a noble apostle |
44:18 | | 'Send back to me God's servants; verily, I am to you a faithful apostle; |
44:19 | | and, 'Exalt not yourselves above God; verily, I come to you with obvious authority |
44:20 | | And, verily, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, that ye stone me not |
44:21 | | And if ye believe not in me then let me alone! |
44:22 | | Then he called upon his Lord, 'Verily, these are a sinful people. |
44:23 | | So journey with my servants by night - verily, ye will be pursued |
44:24 | | But leave the sea in quiet - verily, they are a host to be drowned |
44:25 | | How many gardens and springs have they left |
44:26 | | and corn lands and a noble place |
44:27 | | and comfort wherein they did enjoy themselves |
44:28 | | Thus - and we gave them for an inheritance to another people |
44:29 | | And the heaven wept not for them, nor the earth, nor were they respited |
44:30 | | But we saved the children of Israel from shameful woe! |
44:31 | | - from Pharaoh; verily, he was haughty, one of the extravagant |
44:32 | | And we did choose them, wittingly, above the worlds |
44:33 | | and we gave them signs wherein was an obvious trial |
44:34 | | Verily, these say |
44:35 | | 'It is but our first death |
44:36 | | so bring our fathers, if ye do speak the truth! |
44:37 | | Are they better than the people of Tubbah, and those before them? We destroyed them - verily, they were sinners |
44:38 | | Nor did we create the heavens and the earth, and what is between the two in sport |
44:39 | | we did but create them in truth, though most of them know it not |
44:40 | | Verily, the day of separation is their appointed term |
44:41 | | the day when master shall not avail client at all, nor shall they be helped |
44:42 | | save whomsoever God shall have mercy on; verily, He is the mighty, the merciful |
44:43 | | Verily, the Zaqqum tre |
44:44 | | (shall be) the food of the sinful |
44:45 | | as it were melting, shall it boil in their bellie |
44:46 | | like the boiling of hot water! |
44:47 | | 'Take him and hale him into the midst of hell |
44:48 | | then pour over his head the torment of hot water! |
44:49 | | Taste! verily, thou art the mighty, the honourable |
44:50 | | Verily, this is that whereon ye did dispute! |
44:51 | | Verily, the pious shall be in a safe place |
44:52 | | in gardens and springs |
44:53 | | they shall be clad in satin and stout silk face to face |
44:54 | | Thus!- and we will wed them to bright and large-eyed maids |
44:55 | | They shall call therein for every fruit in safety |
44:56 | | They shall not taste therein of death save their first death, and we will keep them from the torment of hell |
44:57 | | Grace from thy Lord, that is the grand bliss |
44:58 | | And we have only made it easy for thy tongue, that haply they may be mindful |
44:59 | | Then watch thou; verily, they are watching too |
