Wahiduddin Khan rendition of Surah Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers(as-Saffat)
---
37:1 By those [angels] who range themselves in close rank
37:2 and those who drive away [the wicked] with reproo
37:3 and by the reciters of the Reminder
37:4 your God is One
37:5 Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them; Lord of the Easts
37:6 We have adorned the lowest heaven with the beauty of the planets
37:7 and guarded it against all rebellious devils
37:8 they cannot overhear the Higher Assembly for they are pelted from every side
37:9 driven away, and will suffer eternal punishment
37:10 But if anyone does succeed in snatching a glimpse [of such knowledge], he shall be pursued by a piercing flame
37:11 So, ask those who deny the truth if it was harder to create them than all the other things We have created? We created them from sticky clay
37:12 No wonder you are surprised as they laugh with scorn
37:13 When they are reminded, they do not pay heed
37:14 and whenever they see some sign, they ridicule it
37:15 saying, This is plain sorcery
37:16 What! When we have died and become dust and bones, will we be brought back to life again
37:17 along with our forefathers
37:18 Say, Yes indeed, and you will be brought low
37:19 There will be but a single blast and then their eyes will open
37:20 They will say, Woe to us! This is the Day of Reckoning
37:21 [It will be said], This is the Day of Judgement which you have been denying
37:22 But We shall say, Assemble those who did wrong together with their associates and what they worshippe
37:23 besides God, and lead them to the path of the Fire
37:24 and stop them there for questioning
37:25 But what is the matter with you that you cannot help one another
37:26 indeed, on that Day they will surrender themselves
37:27 They will turn upon one another, and question one another
37:28 They will say, You used to come at us from the right
37:29 They will say, No! It was you who would not believ
37:30 we had no power over you; but you yourselves were a rebellious people
37:31 But now our Lords word has come true against us: truly, we are bound to taste [the punishment]
37:32 We led you astray as we were ourselves astray
37:33 On that Day they will all share the punishment
37:34 that is how We deal with evil-doers
37:35 When they were told, There is no deity but God, they turned away with disdain
37:36 and replied, Shall we then give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet
37:37 Surely, he has brought the truth, confirming those who were sent before
37:38 you shall surely taste the painful punishment
37:39 and be rewarded only according to your deeds
37:40 But the chosen servants of God
37:41 shall have a known provisio
37:42 fruits of various kinds; and they shall be honoured
37:43 in the Gardens of Bliss
37:44 seated on couches, facing one another
37:45 A drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring
37:46 white and delicious to those who drink it
37:47 causing no headiness or intoxication
37:48 With them will be spousesmodest of gaze and beautiful of ey
37:49 like closely guarded pearls
37:50 They will turn to one another with questions
37:51 one of them will say, I had a friend
37:52 who used to ask, Do you really believe tha
37:53 after we die and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to judgement
37:54 Then he will say, Shall we look for him
37:55 Then he will look and see him in the midst of the Fire
37:56 He will say, By God! You almost brought me to ruin
37:57 If it had not been for the blessing of my Lord, I would also have been taken to Hell
37:58 Then he will say [to his blessed companions], Are we not going to die
37:59 except for our first death? Are we not going to be punished
37:60 Truly, this is a great victory
37:61 It is for the like of this that all should strive
37:62 Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree
37:63 which We have made as a test for the wrongdoers
37:64 For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire
37:65 and its fruits are like devils heads
37:66 They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it
37:67 then in addition to it they shall have a draught of boiling water to drink
37:68 then surely they shall return to Hell
37:69 They found their fathers had gone astray
37:70 so they are rushing to follow in their footsteps
37:71 And assuredly many of the ancients went astray before them
37:72 though We had sent warners among them
37:73 See how those who were warned met their end
37:74 Not so the chosen servants of God
37:75 Noah cried to Us, and how excellent was Our response
37:76 We saved him and his people from great distress
37:77 and We made his offspring the only survivors
37:78 We left mention of him among later generations
37:79 Peace be upon Noah among all the peoples
37:80 That is how We recompense the righteous
37:81 he was truly one of Our faithful servants
37:82 We drowned the rest
37:83 Abraham was of the same faith
37:84 he came to his Lord with a sound heart
37:85 Behold! he said to his father and to his people, What are these that you worship
37:86 Would you serve false deities instead of God
37:87 What do you think of the Lord of the Worlds
37:88 He looked up at the stars
37:89 And said, I am sick
37:90 so they turned their backs on him and went off
37:91 He turned to their gods and said, Do you not eat
37:92 What is the matter with you that you do not speak
37:93 then he turned on them, striking them down with his right hand
37:94 His people came rushing towards him
37:95 but he said, How can you worship things you carve with your own hands
37:96 when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork
37:97 They said, Build a pyre for him and throw him into the blaze
37:98 They wanted to harm him, but We humiliated them all
37:99 He said, I will go to my Lord: He is sure to guide me
37:100 Lord, grant me a righteous son
37:101 We gave him the good news that he would have a patient, forbearing son
37:102 And when he reached the age when he could work with him, he said, O my son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So tell me what you think of it! He replied, O my father, do as you are commanded; and God willing, you will find me steadfast
37:103 When they had both submitted to God, and he had laid his son down on his face
37:104 We called out to him, Abraham
37:105 you have fulfilled the dream. It is thus indeed that We reward those who do goo
37:106 that surely was a manifest tria
37:107 We ransomed him with a great sacrifice
37:108 and left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations
37:109 Peace and salutation to Abraham
37:110 That is how We recompense the righteous
37:111 truly, he was one of Our faithful servants
37:112 We gave Abraham the good news of Isaaca prophet and a righteous ma
37:113 and blessed him and Isaac too: some of their offspring were good, but some clearly sinned against their souls
37:114 We also bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron
37:115 We saved them and their people from great distress
37:116 and We helped them, so that they were victorious
37:117 and We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear
37:118 and guided them to the straight path
37:119 and We left them thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations
37:120 Peace be upon Moses and Aaron
37:121 This is how We reward those who do good
37:122 truly they were among Our faithful servants
37:123 Elijah too was one of the messengers
37:124 He said to his people, Have you no fear [of God?]
37:125 Do you call on Baal and abandon the Best of Creators
37:126 God your Lord and Lord of your forefathers
37:127 but they rejected him, and thus will certainly be called to account
37:128 except the chosen servants of God
37:129 We left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among the following generation
37:130 Peace be on Elijah and his people
37:131 It is thus indeed that We reward those who do good
37:132 surely he was one of Our believing servants
37:133 Lot was also one of the messengers
37:134 We saved him and all his peopl
37:135 except for an old woman who stayed behin
37:136 and We destroyed the rest
37:137 You pass by their ruins mornin
37:138 and night: will you not take heed
37:139 Jonah too was one of the messengers
37:140 He fled to the overloaded ship
37:141 And then they cast lots and he was the one who lost
37:142 and the fish swallowed him while he was blaming himself
37:143 Had he not been one of those who acknowledge the glory of God
37:144 he would certainly have remained inside the fish till the Day of Resurrection
37:145 But We caused him to be cast forth on to the beach, sick as he was
37:146 and We caused a gourd tree to grow over him
37:147 We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more
37:148 and they believed in him: so We let them live in ease for a while
37:149 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons
37:150 Did We create the angels females, to which they were witnesses
37:151 No indeed! It is one of their fabrications when they say
37:152 God has begotten children. They are truly liars
37:153 Has He chosen daughters over sons
37:154 What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgement
37:155 Will you not then reflect
37:156 Or have you clear evidence
37:157 Then produce your scriptures, if you are telling the truth
37:158 They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be produced before Him [for judgement]
37:159 God is far above what they attribute to Hi
37:160 but not so the true servants of Go
37:161 neither you nor what you worshi
37:162 can lure away from God an
37:163 except those who will burn in Hell
37:164 [The angels say], Every single one of us has his place assigned
37:165 we are those who stand ranged in ranks
37:166 We glorify God
37:167 They say
37:168 If we had had with us a Book like that of the people of old
37:169 we would surely have been God's chosen servants
37:170 but they have rejected it, [the Quran] and they shall soon learn
37:171 And surely Our word has gone forth respecting Our servants, the messengers
37:172 that it is certainly they who will be helped
37:173 and that it is Our host that would certainly triumph
37:174 So turn away from them for a while
37:175 Watch them: they will soon see
37:176 Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment
37:177 When it descends on their courtyards, how terrible that morning will be for those who were warned
37:178 So turn away from them for a while
37:179 And watch, for they will soon see
37:180 Glory be to your Lord: the Lord of Glory is far above what they attribute to Him
37:181 Peace be upon the Messenger
37:182 and praise be to God, the Lord of all the Worlds
