Linda “iLHam” Barto rendition of Surah The Family of Imran, The House of Imran(al-Imran)
---
3:1 Alif. Lam. Meem.
3:2 Allah! No god is there except Him –the Eternal One, the Self-reliant.
3:3 He bestowed upon you, in truth, the Book confirming (the Scriptures) that came before it. He bestowed the Torah and the Gospel [of Jesus]…
3:4 …[He bestowed Scriptures] before this as a guide to humanity. He bestowed the criterion [ie, the differentiation between right and wrong]. Truly, those who won’t believe in the signs of Allah will suffer a severe punishment. Allah is the Victorious, able to avenge.
3:5 Truly, nothing is hidden from Allah on Earth or in Heaven.
3:6 He is the One who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. No god is there except Him, the Victorious, the Perfectly Wise.
3:7 It is He who has bestowed upon you the Book. In it are fundamental Scriptures, which are the Book’s foundation. Other Scriptures are vague. While seeking discord, those who are perverse concentrate on the vague portions and search for secret meanings. No one knows the true meanings, however, except Allah. Those who are steadfast in knowledge say, “We believe in its entirety, which is from our Sovereign Lord.” Only people of understanding will grasp the message.
3:8 “Our Lord, let our hearts not deviate from truth now that You have guided us, but grant us mercy from Your divine presence. You are the Bountiful Provider.
3:9 “Our Lord, You will assemble humanity for a day about which there is no doubt. Allah never fails in keeping His promises.”
3:10 Truly, as for those who won’t believe, their possessions or children will not benefit them against Allah at all. (The disbelievers) are fuel for the fire.
3:11 They are like the people of Pharaoh and those who came before them. They denied Our signs. Allah called them to account for their sins. Allah is severe in punishment.
3:12 Say to those who reject faith, “You will be overcome. You will be assembled into Hell –an evil repose.”
3:13 Surely, a sign came to you in the two armies that met [in combat]. One group was fighting in the cause of Allah. The other consisted of unbelievers. (The unbelievers) saw with their own eyes twice as many [believers]. Allah supports with His aid whom He pleases. Indeed, in this is a lesson for those who can see it.
3:14 Men see as fair the love of things they covet –women and sons, big stashes of gold and silver, branded horses and cattle, and cultivated land. Such are the possession of this world’s life, but with Allah is the best of goals.
3:15 Say, “Shall I give you the good news of things far better than those [possessions of this present life]? For those who fear their Lord are gardens with rivers flowing beneath. They will abide forever with holy companions. They will have the acceptance of Allah. In Allah’s sight are His servants.
3:16 [They are] those who say, ‘Our Lord, we have indeed believed, so forgive us our sins and save us from the agonizing fire.’
3:17 [They are] those who are patient, truthful, and humbly obedient, those who spend (for charity), and those who seek forgiveness in the early hours of morning.
3:18 “Allah bears witness that no deity is there except Him. So do His angels [bear witness] and those endued with knowledge and perseverance for justice. No god is there except Him, the Victorious, the Perfectly Wise.
3:19 “Truly, the religion near Allah is complete submission to His will. The people of the Book did not differ from that except through spite of one another after they had received knowledge. If any deny the verses of Allah, then truly Allah is swift in accountability.”
3:20 If they argue with you, say, “I have submitted my whole self to Allah, and so have those with me.” To the people of the Book and to the people without any [religious] instruction, say, “Do you also submit?” If they do, they are truly guided. If they regress, your duty is only to convey the message. In Allah’s sight are all His servants.
3:21 Truly, for those who won’t believe in Allah’s signs and wrongfully kill the prophets and kill people who believe in justice for all, announce a horrible penalty.
3:22 Their deeds will mean nothing in this world and in the hereafter. They will have no helpers.
3:23 Are you not aware of those who had been given a portion of Scriptures? They were entrusted to let Allah’s Book dictate their law. Some of them rejected it, being in opposition.
3:24 That is because they [the unfaithful Jews] claim, “The fire will not touch us except for a certain number of days.” They have invented false beliefs that cause them to betray their own religion.
3:25 How will it go when We assemble them on a day about which is no doubt. Every soul will be fully paid for what it has done. No one will be cheated.
3:26 Say, “O Allah, Master of Sovereignty, You give power to whom You please, and You strip power from whom You please. You honor whom You please, and You debase whom You please. In Your hand is all goodness. Truly, You have power over all things.
3:27 “You cause the night to gain on the day, and You cause the day to gain on the night. You bring the living from the dead, and You bring the dead from the living. You give sustenance to whom You please, without measure.”
3:28 The believers should not accept unbelievers for guardians in preference to believers. If any do that, no help from Allah will come, except in the form of caution so you may seek protection. Allah Himself cautions you. The final goal is to Allah.
3:29 Say, “Whether you hide what is in your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it. He knows what is of the skies and on Earth. Allah has power over all things.
3:30 “On the day when every soul will be confronted with all the good it has done and all the evil it has done, it will wish that there was a great distance between it and its evil. Allah Himself cautions you, and Allah is full of kindness to those who serve Him.”
3:31 Say, “If you love Allah, follow me. Allah will love you and forgive you for your sins. Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
3:32 Say, “Obey Allah and the messenger.” If they resist, truly Allah does not love the unbelievers.
3:33 Truly, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran over other people.
3:34 [They are] a [chosen] line of descent. Allah is All-hearing, the All-knowing.
3:35 Recall that a woman of Imran prayed, “My Lord, I truly dedicate to You what is in my womb, as a devotion. Accept this from me. Truly, You are All-hearing, the All-knowing.”
3:36 When she had given birth, she said, “My Lord, I have given birth to a female.” Allah knows best what should be born. “The male is not like the female. I have named her Mary. I seek Your protection for her and her children against Satan the reject.”
3:37 Her Lord favorably accepted the girl. He caused her to grow admirably. He placed her in the care of Zachariah [to be raised in the Temple]. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the prayer room, he found her with provision. He asked, “O Mary, from where did this come for you?” She answered, “It is from Allah. Truly, Allah provides to whom He wills, without measure.”
3:38 There [in the prayer room], Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, “My Lord, grant to me, from Your grace, the gift of a good child. Certainly, You hear prayer.”
3:39 As he stood praying in the prayer room, angels called to him, “Truly, Allah sends you good news of John. He will confirm a Word from Allah. He will be honorable and virtuous. He will be a prophet among the righteous.”
3:40 He said, “My Lord, how can I have a son? Old age has certainly come upon me, and my wife is barren.” (The angel) said, “So be it. Allah does what he wills.”
3:41 (Zachariah) prayed, “O my Lord, appoint a sign for me.” (The angel) said, “Your sign is that, for three days, you will not be able to speak to people except through gestures. Remember your Lord constantly. Praise Him evening and morning.
3:42 Remember when angels said, “O Mary, truly Allah has chosen you and purified you and preferred you over all other women of the world.
3:43 O Mary, remain faithful to your Lord. Prostrate in worship. Bow with those who bow.”
3:44 This is news unseen [by you]. We reveal it to you. You were not with them when they cast rods to see who should be Mary’s guardian. You were not with them when they argued [about the outcome of casting rods].
3:45 Remember when angels said, “O Mary, truly Allah gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name will be the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary. He will be honored in this world and in the hereafter. He will be among those brought near [to Allah].
3:46 From the cradle, he will speak to people, as well as speak as an adult. He will be among the righteous.”
3:47 She said, “My Lord, how can I have a child when no man has even touched me?” (An angel) said, “So be it. Allah creates what He will. When He decides a thing, He only says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.
3:48 “He will teach him the Book, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel.
3:49 “He will make him a messenger to the Children of Israel [saying], ‘Truly, I come to you with a message from your Lord. I will create for you, from clay, the shape of a bird. I will breathe into it, and it will become a [living] bird, by Allah’s will. I will heal the blind and the leper. I will restore life to the dead, by Allah’s will. I will tell you what you should eat and what you should store in your houses. Truly, in all these things is a sign for you if you are believers.
3:50 “‘I confirm that Torah which came before me. I make lawful for you some of that which was forbidden to you. I come to you with a sign from your Lord. Fear Allah, and obey me.
3:51 “‘Truly, Allah is my Lord and your Lord. Worship Him. That is the Straight Way.’”
3:52 When Jesus became aware of their disbelief, he said, “Who will be my helpers for Allah?” The disciples said, “We will be helpers for Allah. We believe in Allah. Testify that we submit wholly to Allah.”
3:53 [The disciples prayed,] “Our Lord, we believe in what You have revealed. We follow the messenger. Enter us into the company of the witnesses.”
3:54 (The unbelievers) planned, and Allah planned. Allah is the best planner.
3:55 Allah said, “O Jesus, I am taking you and then raising you to Me. I will vindicate you [of the false accusations] from the blasphemers. On the Day of Resurrection, I will declare your followers superior over the unbelievers. On that day, you [all humanity] will return to Me. I will judge among you concerning the matters about which you dispute.”
3:56 As for the unbelievers, I will cause them to suffer a terrible punishment in this world and in the hereafter. They will have no helpers.
3:57 As for the believers who live righteously, He will grant their reward in full. Allah does not love the [unrepentant] sinners.
3:58 We recite to you these verses and a wise reminder.
3:59 The simile of Jesus, in relation to Allah, is the same as Adam: He created (Adam) from dust, and then He said to him, “Be!” and he was.
3:60 The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among those who doubt.
3:61 If anyone argues about this matter with you, now that knowledge has come to you, say, “Come. We shall assemble our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves. We shall humbly pray and invoke the condemnation of Allah on whoever is lying.”
3:62 This is surely the true account. No god is there except Allah. Allah is certainly He who is the Victorious, the Perfectly Wise.
3:63 If they backslide, Allah is aware of the sinners.
3:64 Say, “O People of the Book, let us come to a common word among us in effect that we [all] worship none except Allah and that we associate no partners with Him and that none of us accept lords other than Allah.” If they shun you, then say, “Witness that we are those who submit to Allah.”
3:65 Why do you people of the Book argue about Abraham [eg, his role in Judaism and Christianity]? Neither the Torah nor the Gospel [of Jesus] was revealed until after him? Don’t you have any sense?
3:66 You are always arguing about things of which you have some knowledge. Why would you argue about something unknown to you? Allah knows, and you do not know.
3:67 Abraham was not a Jew or a Christian. He was true in faith and submitted to Allah. He was not one of the idolaters.
3:68 The people most worthy to be counted with Abraham are those who follow him, as do this Prophet [Muhammed] and those who believe [with him]. Allah is the Guardian of all those who have faith.
3:69 Some of the people of the Book would like to lead you astray [away from Islam]. They lead only themselves astray and don’t even realize it.
3:70 People of the Book, why do you reject the signs of Allah, which you witness?
3:71 People of the Book, why do you cloak truth with fabrication, thereby concealing the truth, when you do have sense?
3:72 Some of the people of the Book said, “At the beginning of the day, let’s [claim to] believe in what was revealed to the [Muslim] believers. Later, let’s reject it. Perhaps (the converts) will return [to Judaism].”
3:73 Do not trust [in religious matters] anyone who does not follow your faith. Say, “Truly, all guidance is Allah’s guidance. [Does it concern you] that someone may be given [a message] like that which was given to you? [Do you worry] that they [who receive the message] may debate with you in the presence of your Lord?” Say, “Truly, grace is in Allah’s hand. He bestows it on whom He will. Allah is All-embracing, the All-knowing.
3:74 He chooses for His grace whom He will. Allah is unlimited in His great bounty.”
3:75 Among the people of the Book is someone who can be trusted to return a treasure entrusted to him/her. Among them is someone who would not return even a single coin entrusted to him/her, unless you persistently demand it. That is a trait of their saying, “No blame will be on us in regard to these illiterate people.” They knowingly tell a lie about Allah.
3:76 Nonsense! As for whoever fulfills his/her covenant and has reverence, Allah loves those who fear Him.
3:77 Some people barter, for a small gain, their covenant with Allah and their promises. They will not have blessings in the hereafter. Allah will not speak to them or even look at them on the Day of Resurrection. He will not purify them [of their sins]. A terrible punishment awaits them.
3:78 Certainly, some among them distort the Book with their tongues in order to make you think that what they say is from the Book even though it is not from the Book. They say, “This is what Allah says,” although it is not from Allah. They knowingly tell a lie about Allah.
3:79 It would not be proper, concerning any person unto whom Allah had given Scripture and wisdom and the gift of prophecy, for him to then say to people, “Worship me instead of Allah.” Instead, [he says,] “Be faithful servants of the Lord by teaching the Scriptures and by your own study.”
3:80 He would not order you to accept angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelieve after you submitted to Allah?
3:81 Allah made a covenant with the prophets: “Behold that which I have given you of the Book and wisdom. If, later, a messenger comes to you, confirming that [Scripture] that you already have, you should believe in him and help him.” He said, “Do you agree, and will you take this responsibility?” They answered, “We agree.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I will be with you among the witnesses.”
3:82 After this, any who regress are truly defiantly sinful.
3:83 Do they seek a faith other than that of Allah? Whatever is of Heaven and Earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly. They will all return to Him.
3:84 Say, “We believe in Allah and in what has been bestowed upon us and in what was bestowed upon Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the [twelve Judaic] tribes. We believe in what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Sovereign Lord. We do not prefer any above the others. To Allah we submit our will.”
3:85 If someone wants a religion other than Islam [ie, submission to God], it will not be acceptable. He/she will be among the losers in the hereafter.
3:86 Why would Allah guide those who deny faith after having believed, after having witnessed the truth of the messenger, and after having seen evidence? Allah does not guide sinful people.
3:87 Their reward is rejection by Allah, His angels, and all humanity.
3:88 They will always experience it. The punishment will not be eased for them. They will not be pardoned.
3:89 The exceptions are those who eventually repent and live righteously. Certainly, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
3:90 Some people disbelieve after having believed, and they become adamant in their unbelief. Their repentance will not be accepted. They have gone far astray.
3:91 Some people won’t believe, and then they die in a state of unbelief. Certainly, all the gold on earth could not ransom them. They will suffer a terrible punishment. They will have no helpers.
3:92 You cannot attain perfection until you spend [charitably] from what you love. Allah is certainly well aware of whatever you give.
3:93 All food was lawful for the Children of Israel, except for what Israel had declared unlawful itself, until the Torah was revealed. Say, “Bring the Torah and read it, if you are honest.
3:94 After that, any who invent lies about Allah are sinners.”
3:95 Say, “Allah speaks truth. Follow the religion of Abraham the honorable. He was not one of the idolaters.
3:96 “Certainly, the first house [of worship] for people was built at Baca [now known as Mecca]. It is a place of blessing and guidance for all people.
3:97 In it are clear signs and where Abraham once stood [to pray]. Whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the house is a duty to Allah for humanity –for whoever is able to make the trip. “As for the unbelievers, truly, Allah is independent from His creation.”
3:98 Say, “O People of the Book, why do you not believe in the [new] verses of Allah? Allah is a witness over whatever you do.”
3:99 Say, “O People of the Book, why do you hinder [Muslim] believers from the way of Allah? Why do you seek to make it crooked, when you are witnesses? Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
3:100 O Believers, if you obey certain people who possess the (Bible), they will cause you to revert to being unbelievers after you have believed.
3:101 How could you deny the truth when Allah’s messages are revealed to you and when His messenger is in your midst? Whoever is secure with Allah has certainly been guided on the Straight Way.
3:102 O Believers, revere Allah as He should be revered. Do not die without being submitted to Allah.
3:103 All of you, hold firmly to the rope of Allah. Do not be divided [into sects]. Remember the grace of Allah on you when you were enemies, and He made friendship among your hearts. [Remember when,] by His grace, you became as family. You were right on the edge of the pit of the fire [of Hell], and He saved you from it. Thus, Allah clarifies His signs for you, so you may be guided.
3:104 May people among you invite [others] to goodness. May they endorse what is right and forbid what is wrong. They will be successful.
3:105 Do not be like those who have become divided and argumentative after having received obvious signs. They will receive a terrible punishment.
3:106 One day [Day of Judgment] some faces will brighten, and some faces will darken. To those whose faces are dark: “Did you reject faith after having accepted it? Now suffer the torment for your disbelief.”
3:107 Those whose faces are bright, however, will live within Allah’s mercy eternally.
3:108 These are the signs of Allah. We convey them to you in truth. Allah intends no injustice to any of His creations.
3:109 To Allah belongs all that is of Heaven and Earth. All things will return to Allah.
3:110 You [who are truly surrendered to God’s will] are the best people evolved from humanity. You promote what is righteous and prohibit what is evil and believe in Allah. If only [all] the people of the Book had faith, it would be better for them. Among (the people of the Book) are some who [truly] have faith, but many of them are wretched sinners.
3:111 They cannot harm you except with slight damage. If they fight you, they will [eventually] retreat. They will not be helped.
3:112 Shame will be upon them wherever they are. An exception is for those protected by a covenant with Allah and a covenant with people. They incur the wrath of Allah. Disgrace is upon them. That is because they rejected the signs of Allah, and they killed the prophets in defiance of what is right. That is because they rebelled and sinned.
3:113 They are not all alike! Some of the people of the Book are upstanding! They recite the Scriptures of Allah all night, and they prostrate [in adoration].
3:114 They believe in Allah and the Day of Resurrection. They endorse what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they rush to do good deeds. They are among the righteous.
3:115 Of the good done by (the people of the Book), nothing will be rejected. Allah well knows those who live righteously.
3:116 For the unbelievers, neither their possessions nor their descendants will avail them anything against Allah. They will be companions of the fire, dwelling therein.
3:117 What they expense in the life of this world is comparable to a cold front bringing a biting frost. Stricken are the harvests of people who have deceived themselves. Allah has not betrayed them; they betrayed themselves.
3:118 O Believers, do not intimately trust those other than people like you [who share your values]. They will succeed in corrupting you. They only want to ruin you. Despicable hatred has already appeared from their mouths; what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made the signs clear, if you have wisdom.
3:119 You love them, but they do not love you. You believe in the whole Book. When they meet you, they say, “We believe.” When they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage against you. Say, “Die in your rage. Allah surely knows what lurks in hearts.”
3:120 If good fortune comes to you, it grieves them. If tragedy comes to you, they rejoice over it. If you are patient and reverent, their deceit will never harm you. Certainly, Allah surrounds what they do.
3:121 Recall that you left your home early in the morning to position the believers for battle. Allah is All-hearing, the All-knowing.
3:122 Two groups from among you were about to falter, although Allah was their protector. Believers must place their trust in Allah.
3:123 Allah helped you at [the Battle of] Badr when you were weak. Fear Allah so you may be grateful.
3:124 Recall that you said to the believers, “Is it not enough for you that your Lord will reinforce you with a dispatch of three thousand angels?”
3:125 Yes, if you are patient and reverent when (the enemy) suddenly attacks you, the Lord will reinforce you with five thousand, adorned angels.
3:126 Allah made this a message of hope for you and assurance for your hearts. No victory comes except from Allah, the Victorious, the Perfectly Wise.
3:127 He may vanquish some of the disbelievers or suppress them so that they may retreat, frustrated.
3:128 It is not your concern whether (Allah) accepts their repentance or punishes them. They surely are sinners.
3:129 To Allah belongs what is of Heaven and Earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
3:130 O Believers, do not consume usury, which is [interest or fees] doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah for your prosperity.
3:131 Fear the fire, which is prepared for the unbelievers.
3:132 Obey Allah and the messenger so you may obtain mercy.
3:133 Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord. A garden whose expanse is that of the skies and Earth is prepared for the righteous.
3:134 They invest, whether in times of prosperity or adversity. They restrain anger and forgive people. Allah loves those who perform goodwill.
3:135 [He loves] those who, having committed a regretful deed or otherwise wronged their own souls, earnestly remember Allah and ask for forgiveness for their sins. And who can forgive sins except Allah? [The forgiven] do not intentionally persist in their sinful lifestyles.
3:136 For such as those, their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens, with underground rivers, for an eternal dwelling. How excellent a recompense for those who achieve!
3:137 Many were the ways of life that have passed away before you. Travel throughout the earth and see what was the end of those who rejected truth.
3:138 Here [in the Qur’an] is a simple statement to humanity, and a guidance and instruction to those who fear Allah.
3:139 So do not despair or become depressed. You will come out on top if your faith is genuine.
3:140 If tragedy afflicts you, similar tragedy has certainly affected other people. We cause such times to run in cycles. This is so Allah may distinguish the believers and choose witnesses from among you. Allah does not love sinners.
3:141 Allah may perfect the believers and deprive the unbelievers.
3:142 Did you think that you would enter Paradise before Allah distinguished those who are valiant and patient?
3:143 You hoped for death until you actually faced it. Now you have seen it with your own eyes.
3:144 Muhammed is no more than a messenger. Certainly many messengers passed before him. If he died or was killed, would you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his/her heels will not harm Allah at all, but Allah will reward the grateful people.
3:145 A soul cannot die except by Allah’s permission, at a determined time. To whoever desires a reward in this life, We shall give it to him/her. To whoever desires a reward in the hereafter, We shall give it to him/her. We will reward the grateful people.
3:146 How many of the prophets fought along with large bands of devout people? They never lost heart from whatever [hardship] they met in Allah’s way, and they did not weaken or give in. Allah loves the patient people.
3:147 Their only words were, “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and any excesses in our affairs. Establish our feet firmly and grant us victory over the unbelievers.”
3:148 Allah gave them a reward in this world and the excellent reward of the hereafter. Allah loves the righteous people.
3:149 O Believers, if you pay attention to the unbelievers, they will cause you to turn back on your heels, and you will return to being losers.
3:150 Nonsense! Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.
3:151 We will cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers because they associate partners with Allah. Nothing authorizes that. Their goal is the fire. What an evil home for the sinners!
3:152 Certainly, Allah fulfilled His promise to you. With His permission, you were about to subdue (your enemy). You faltered and began to argue about the order [to fight]. You disobeyed the order after He had shown you that [victory] which you would love. Some of you desired this world. Some of you desired the hereafter. He diverted you from (your foes) so that He may test you. Certainly, He has forgiven you. Allah is gracious to the believers.
3:153 Recall the time you fled. You paid no heed to anyone. The messenger was calling you from the rear. (Allah) exchanged one sorrow for another sorrow so that you would not grieve over what you lost or at what happened to you. Allah is all-aware of what you do.
3:154 After this distress, He bestowed calm on a group of you who succumbed to sleep. Another group of you were anxious, worrying about Allah and His intention, out of ignorance. They said, “Do we have any say in this business?” Say, “This is totally Allah’s business.” They hide within themselves what they dare not reveal to you. They say, “If we had anything to do with this business, we would not even be here, being killed.” Say, “Even if you had remained in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would have died anyway. Allah tested what was in your breasts so He might purify what was in your hearts. Allah is all-aware of the secrets of hearts.”
3:155 As for those who retreated on the day that two armies were met, Satan caused them to fail because of some [sins] they had committed. Allah has certainly forgiven them. Truly, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Tolerant.
3:156 O Believers, do not be like the unbelievers who talk about their brothers when they are traveling through the earth or engaged in fighting. They say, “If they had stayed behind with us, they would not have died or been killed.” Allah makes that a regret in their hearts. Allah gives life and causes death. Allah sees all that you do.
3:157 If you are killed or die in the way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all they could amass.
3:158 Whether you die or are killed, you will be assembled before Allah.
3:159 Because of the mercy of Allah, you respond gently to them. If you were severe or acted with a hard heart, they would break away from you. Pardon them and ask for forgiveness for them. Consult them in affairs; and then, when you have made a decision, put your trust in Allah. Truly, Allah loves those who trust Him.
3:160 If Allah helps you, none can overcome you. If He forsakes you, who is there, after Him, who can help you? In Allah, believers should put their trust.
3:161 It is not possible for a prophet to be deceptive. One who is deceptive will be confronted with his/her deceit on the Day of Resurrection. Every person will be reimbursed for whatever he/she has done. No one will be wronged.
3:162 Is one who follows the good pleasure of Allah like one who brings upon him-/herself the wrath of Allah and whose goal is Hell? What a terrible goal!
3:163 They are on different levels as far as Allah is concerned. Allah is all-seeing of what they do.
3:164 Allah certainly bestowed a favor upon the believers by sending them a messenger from among themselves. He recites verses for them and purifies them. He teaches them the Book and wisdom, although they were previously lost in sin.
3:165 When a disaster struck you, although you afflicted (your enemies) with one twice as big, you said, “From where is this?” Say, “It is from yourselves. Truly, Allah is all-powerful over everything.
3:166 What happened to you on the day when two armies met in battle happened by Allah’s permission. That is so He could distinguish the believers…
3:167 …[So He could separate the believers] from the hypocrites.” They were told, “Come fight in Allah’s cause,” or, “Defend yourselves.” They answered, “If we only knew battle skills, we would have followed you.” On that day, they were closer to unbelief than to faith. They say with their mouths something that is not in their hearts. Allah is well aware of what they hide.
3:168 (The unbelievers) say, about their brothers, while they themselves just sit, “If only (those soldiers) had listened to us, they would not have been killed.” Say, “Avert your own deaths if you are telling the truth.
3:169 Do not think of those killed in the way of Allah as dead. No, they live, finding their provisions in the presence of their Lord.
3:170 They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah. They receive good news about those who have not yet joined them and are left behind –that they will have no fear or grief.
3:171 They glory in the grace and the bounty from Allah and in the fact Allah does not allow the reward of the faithful to be lost.
3:172 Those who answered the call of Allah and the Messenger, even after being wounded, those who do right and refrain from wrong have a great reward.
3:173 People said to them, “A great army is gathering against you, so be afraid.” That increased their faith, however. They said, “Allah is enough for us, and He is the best Trustee.”
3:174 They returned with grace and bounty from Allah. No harm ever touched them, for they followed the good pleasure of Allah. Allah is the owner of bounty.
3:175 It is only Satan that frightens you of his allies. Do not be afraid of them, but fear Me if you are believers.
3:176 Do not be grieved by those who rush into unbelief. Certainly, they can do no harm to Allah. Allah’s plan is to give them no portion in the hereafter. Instead, a severe punishment awaits them.
3:177 Certainly, those who purchase unbelief at the price of faith can do no harm to Allah, but they will have a grievous punishment.
3:178 Do not let the unbelievers think that Our respite to them is good for them. We grant them respite so they may grow in their iniquity, but they will have a shameful punishment.
3:179 Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which you are now until He separates what is evil from what is good. Allah will not disclose to you the secrets of the unseen, but Allah chooses of His messengers whom He pleases. So believe in Allah and His messengers. If you believe and have reverence, you will have a reward without measure.
3:180 Do not allow those who covetously withhold the gifts, which Allah has given them of His grace, think that it is good for them. No, it will be bad for them. Their necks will be encircled with what they withheld, on the Day of Resurrection. To Allah belongs the heritage of the skies and Earth. Allah is well aware of all that you do.
3:181 Truly, Allah has heard the saying of those who said [when asked for donations], “Allah must be poor, while we are rich.” We will record what they said, in addition to [the account of] their unjustly killing the prophets. We will say, “Taste the punishment of fire.
3:182 That is because of what your hands forwarded. Allah is not unjust to the servants.”
3:183 Some of them say, “Allah never told us to believe in any messenger unless he brought us an offering consumed by fire [from Heaven].” Say, “Messengers came before me, and they had miracles, including that one you just mentioned. Why then did you kill them, if you’re telling the truth?”
3:184 If they reject you, certainly messengers before you were rejected. They came with miracles, Scriptures, and the enlightening Book.
3:185 Every soul will taste death, and only on the Day of Judgment will you be paid your full recompense. Whoever is far removed from the fire and admitted into Paradise will have attained the purpose of life. The life of this world is nothing but enjoyment of delusion.
3:186 You will certainly be tested in your possessions and in your personal selves. You will certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the (Scriptures) before you and from those who worship many gods. If you are patient and reverent, then that indeed will be a determining factor in all affairs.
3:187 [Remember that] Allah took a covenant from the people of the Book to make (the Word) obvious to humanity and not to hide it. They tossed it aside and exchanged it for a miserable gain. Vile was the bargain they made!
3:188 Do not concentrate on those who exult in what they have brought about and love to be praised for what they have not done. Do not think that they can escape the penalty. For them is a dreadful penalty.
3:189 To Allah belongs the dominion of Heaven and Earth. Allah has power over all things.
3:190 Surely, in the creation of the skies and Earth, in the alternation of night and day, signs are there for people of understanding.
3:191 [They are] people who celebrate Allah, whether standing, sitting, or lying on their sides. [They] think about the creation of the skies and the earth: “Our Lord, You have not created this for nothing. Glory to You! Grant us salvation from the penalty of the fire.
3:192 “Our Lord, any whom You do admit to the fire, You will certainly cover with shame, and never will the sinners find any helpers.”
3:193 [The believers say,] “Our Lord, we certainly have heard the call of one calling to faith, ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, blot out our iniquities, and allow us to die among the righteous.
3:194 “Our Lord, grant us what You promised through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. You certainly never break a promise.”
3:195 Their Lord responded to them, “Indeed, I will never squander the deeds of any of you, whether male or female. You are each among the others. As for those who have left their homes, were driven from their homes, suffered harm in My cause, fought and were slain, certainly, I will erase their sins from them. I will admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath –a reward from the presence of Allah, and with Him is the best reward.”
3:196 Do not be confused because unbelievers seem to be able to do whatever they want all over the world.
3:197 They are having only a brief enjoyment. Ultimately, they are going to Hell. What a terrible goal!
3:198 As for those who are dutiful to their Lord, they will have gardens with underground rivers. They will live there forever as hospitality from Allah. What Allah has planned is best for the righteous.
3:199 Certainly, some people of the Book believe in Allah, in what was revealed to (Prophet Muhammed), and in what was revealed to them. They bow in humility to Allah. They do not exchange the signs of Allah for a miserable gain. For them is a reward with their Lord. Certainly, Allah is swift in account.
3:200 O Believers, persevere in patience and faithfulness. Be resolute and fear Allah so you may prosper.
