---|
26:1 | | ?a. Sin. Mim |
26:2 | | These are the signs of the clear Book |
26:3 | | Perhaps thou dost torment thyself that they are not believers |
26:4 | | If We will, We will send down a sign from Heaven and their heads would remain bowed before it in humility |
26:5 | | Yet no new reminder comes to them from the Compassionate, but that they turn away from it |
26:6 | | Indeed, they have denied it, but there shall come to them the tidings of that which they used to mock |
26:7 | | Have they not considered the earth, how much of every noble kind We have caused to grow therein |
26:8 | | Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:9 | | And truly thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:10 | | And [remember] when thy Lord called out to Moses, “Go to the wrongdoing people |
26:11 | | the people of Pharaoh. Will they not be reverent? |
26:12 | | He said, “My Lord, truly I fear that they will deny me |
26:13 | | And my breast will be straitened, and my tongue will not be unfettered; so send unto Aaron |
26:14 | | And they have a crime against me; thus I fear that they will slay me. |
26:15 | | He said, “Nay! Go forth, then, with Our signs. We shall be with you, listening |
26:16 | | So go to Pharaoh and say, ‘Verily we are sent by the Lord of the worlds |
26:17 | | that you may send with us the Children of Israel.’ |
26:18 | | He said, “Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not stay among us for years of your life |
26:19 | | And you did your deed which you did, and you are one of the ingrates. |
26:20 | | He said, “I did it then, when I was one of those who are astray |
26:21 | | So I fled from you when I was afraid of you. Then my Lord granted me judgment and placed me among the messengers |
26:22 | | And that blessing you recount to me is that you have enslaved the Children of Israel. |
26:23 | | Pharaoh said, “And what is the Lord of the worlds? |
26:24 | | He said, “The Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is between them—would that you were certain. |
26:25 | | He said to those around him, “Do you not hear? |
26:26 | | He said, “Your Lord, and the Lord of your fathers of old. |
26:27 | | He said, “Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is possessed! |
26:28 | | He said, “The Lord of the East and the West and whatsoever is between them, if you understand. |
26:29 | | He said, “Truly if you take a god apart from me, I shall place you among the imprisoned! |
26:30 | | He said, “And if I bring you something manifest? |
26:31 | | “Bring it, then, if you are among the truthful. |
26:32 | | So Moses cast his staff, and behold, it was a serpent manifest |
26:33 | | Then he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the beholders |
26:34 | | He said to the notables around him, “Truly this is a knowing sorcerer |
26:35 | | who desires to expel you from your land with his sorcery. What would you command? |
26:36 | | They said, “Leave him and his brother a while, and send marshalers to the citie |
26:37 | | to bring to you every knowing sorcerer. |
26:38 | | So the sorcerers were brought together for the tryst of an appointed day |
26:39 | | And it was said unto the people, “Will you gather |
26:40 | | that haply we may follow the sorcerers if they are the victors? |
26:41 | | Then, when the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, “Shall we truly have a reward if we are the victors? |
26:42 | | He said, “Yes, and you shall then be among those brought nigh. |
26:43 | | Moses said to them, “Cast what you would cast! |
26:44 | | So they cast their ropes and staffs and said, “By the might of Pharaoh, we shall surely be the victors! |
26:45 | | Then Moses cast his staff, and behold, it devours what they make falsely |
26:46 | | Then were the sorcerers cast down, prostrating |
26:47 | | They said, “We believe in the Lord of the worlds |
26:48 | | the Lord of Moses and Aaron. |
26:49 | | He said, “Do you believe in Him before I give you leave? He is indeed your chief, who has taught you sorcery. You will surely know! I shall surely cut off your hands and your feet from opposite sides, and I shall surely crucify you all! |
26:50 | | They said, “It is no harm. Truly unto our Lord do we turn |
26:51 | | Truly we hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins for our having been the first of the believers. |
26:52 | | Then We revealed unto Moses, “Set forth with My servants by night; you shall indeed be pursued. |
26:53 | | Then Pharaoh sent marshalers to the cities [saying] |
26:54 | | “These indeed are a small band |
26:55 | | and indeed they have enraged us |
26:56 | | and we are a host at the ready! |
26:57 | | So We expelled them from gardens and springs |
26:58 | | and treasures and a noble station |
26:59 | | So it was, and We made the Children of Israel to inherit them |
26:60 | | Then they pursued them at sunrise |
26:61 | | And when the two hosts saw one another, the companions of Moses said, “We are overtaken! |
26:62 | | He said, “Nay! Truly my Lord is with me; He will guide me. |
26:63 | | Then We revealed unto Moses, “Strike the sea with thy staff!” and it parted, and each part was as a great mountain |
26:64 | | And thither We brought the others nigh |
26:65 | | And We delivered Moses and those with him all together |
26:66 | | Then We drowned the others |
26:67 | | Truly in that is a sign, though most of them are not believers |
26:68 | | And truly thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:69 | | And recite unto them the story of Abraham |
26:70 | | when he said to his father and his people, “What are you worshipping? |
26:71 | | They said, “We worship idols, and we remain ever devoted to them. |
26:72 | | He said, “Do they hear you when you call |
26:73 | | Or do they benefit or harm you? |
26:74 | | They said, “Nay, but we found our fathers doing so. |
26:75 | | He said, “Have you considered what you worship |
26:76 | | you and your ancestors |
26:77 | | For they are all enemies unto me, save the Lord of the worlds |
26:78 | | Who created me, and guides me |
26:79 | | and Who feeds me and gives me drink |
26:80 | | and Who, when I am ill, heals me |
26:81 | | and Who causes me to die, then gives me life |
26:82 | | and Who I hope will forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgment |
26:83 | | My Lord! Grant me judgment, and bind me to the righteous |
26:84 | | And make for me faithful renown among later generations |
26:85 | | And place me among the heirs of the Garden of bliss |
26:86 | | And forgive my father—he is one of those who are astray |
26:87 | | And disgrace me not on the Day they are resurrected |
26:88 | | the Day when neither wealth nor children avail |
26:89 | | save for him who comes to God with a sound heart. |
26:90 | | And the Garden will be brought nigh unto the reverent |
26:91 | | and Hellfire will become apparent to the errant |
26:92 | | And it will be said unto them, “Where is that which you worshippe |
26:93 | | apart from God? Are they helping you or helping themselves? |
26:94 | | Then they shall be toppled into it, they and the errant |
26:95 | | and the hosts of Iblis all together |
26:96 | | They will say, as they dispute with one another therein |
26:97 | | “By God, indeed we were in manifest error |
26:98 | | when we made you equal with the Lord of the worlds |
26:99 | | And none caused us to go astray but the guilty |
26:100 | | So now we have no intercessors |
26:101 | | nor any loyal friend |
26:102 | | If we had another turn, we would be among the believers. |
26:103 | | Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:104 | | And truly thy Lord is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:105 | | The people of Noah denied the messengers |
26:106 | | when their brother Noah said unto them, “Will you not be reverent |
26:107 | | Truly I am a trustworthy messenger unto you |
26:108 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:109 | | And I ask not of you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of the worlds |
26:110 | | So reverence God and obey me. |
26:111 | | They said, “Shall we believe you, when the lowliest follow you? |
26:112 | | He said, “What knowledge have I of what they used to do |
26:113 | | Their reckoning is only by my Lord, were you but aware |
26:114 | | And I shall not drive away the believers |
26:115 | | I am but a clear warner. |
26:116 | | They said, “Truly if you cease not, O Noah, you shall indeed be among the stoned. |
26:117 | | He said, “My Lord, verily my people have denied me |
26:118 | | So decide between me and them, and deliver me and the believers who are with me! |
26:119 | | So We delivered him and those who were with him in the full-laden Ark |
26:120 | | Then afterwards We drowned those who remained |
26:121 | | Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:122 | | And truly thy Lord is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:123 | | ?Ad denied the messengers |
26:124 | | when their brother Hud said unto them, “Will you not be reverent |
26:125 | | Truly I am a trustworthy messenger unto you |
26:126 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:127 | | And I ask not of you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of the worlds |
26:128 | | Do you frivolously build on every high place a sign |
26:129 | | And do you occupy castles, that haply you may ever abide |
26:130 | | And when you strike, do you strike as tyrants |
26:131 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:132 | | And reverence Him who has succored you with what you know |
26:133 | | succored you with cattle and children |
26:134 | | and gardens and springs |
26:135 | | Truly I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day! |
26:136 | | They said, “It is the same to us whether you exhort us or whether you are not among those who exhort |
26:137 | | This is naught but the ethos of those of old |
26:138 | | and we shall not be punished. |
26:139 | | So they denied him, and We destroyed them. Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:140 | | And truly thy Lord is, indeed, the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:141 | | The Thamud denied the messengers |
26:142 | | when their brother ?ali? said unto them, “Will you not be reverent |
26:143 | | Truly I am a trustworthy messenger unto you |
26:144 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:145 | | And I ask not of you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of the worlds |
26:146 | | Will you be left among that which is here, secure |
26:147 | | amid gardens and springs |
26:148 | | sown fields, date palms with ripe stalks |
26:149 | | And you skillfully hew dwellings in the mountains |
26:150 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:151 | | And obey not the commands of the prodigal |
26:152 | | who work corruption upon the earth, and do not set matters aright. |
26:153 | | They said, “You are but one of the bewitched |
26:154 | | You are naught but a human being like us; so bring a sign, if you are among the truthful. |
26:155 | | He said, “This is a she-camel; she shall have drink and you shall drink on an appointed day |
26:156 | | And touch her not with harm, lest you be taken by the punishment of a tremendous day. |
26:157 | | But they hamstrung her, and then became remorseful |
26:158 | | So the punishment seized them. Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:159 | | And truly thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:160 | | The people of Lot denied the messengers |
26:161 | | when their brother Lot said unto them, “Will you not be reverent |
26:162 | | Truly I am a trustworthy messenger unto you |
26:163 | | so reverence God and obey me |
26:164 | | And I ask not of you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of the worlds |
26:165 | | Among all creatures do you come unto males |
26:166 | | leaving your spouses your Lord created for you? Nay, but you are a transgressing people. |
26:167 | | They said, “If you cease not, O Lot, you will be among those who are expelled. |
26:168 | | He said, “Truly I am of those who detest what you do |
26:169 | | My Lord! Deliver me and my family from what they do. |
26:170 | | So We delivered him and his family all together |
26:171 | | save for an old woman among those who lagged behind |
26:172 | | Then We destroyed the others |
26:173 | | And We rained a rain upon them. Evil was the rain of the warned |
26:174 | | Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:175 | | And truly thy Lord is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:176 | | The inhabitants of the thicket denied the messengers |
26:177 | | when Shu?ayb said unto them, “Will you not be reverent |
26:178 | | Truly I am a trustworthy messenger unto you |
26:179 | | So reverence God and obey me |
26:180 | | And I ask not of you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of the worlds |
26:181 | | Give full measure, and be not among those who fall short |
26:182 | | Weigh with the right balance |
26:183 | | and diminish not people’s goods, nor behave wickedly upon the earth, working corruption |
26:184 | | And reverence Him Who created you and the generations of old. |
26:185 | | They said, “You are but one of the bewitched |
26:186 | | You are naught but a human being like us, and indeed we deem you to be among the liars |
26:187 | | so make fragments from the sky fall upon us, if you are among the truthful. |
26:188 | | He said, “My Lord knows best what you do. |
26:189 | | So they denied him, and the punishment of the day of gloom seized them. Truly it was the punishment of a tremendous day |
26:190 | | Truly in that is a sign, but most of them are not believers |
26:191 | | And truly thy Lord is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:192 | | And truly it is a revelation of the Lord of the worlds |
26:193 | | brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit |
26:194 | | upon thine heart—that thou mayest be among the warners |
26:195 | | in a clear, Arabic tongue |
26:196 | | It is indeed in the scriptures of those of old |
26:197 | | Is it not a sign for them that the learned of the Children of Israel know it |
26:198 | | And had We sent it down upon some non-Arab |
26:199 | | and he recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it |
26:200 | | Thus do We place it into the hearts of the guilty |
26:201 | | they will not believe in it till they see the painful punishment |
26:202 | | so it will come upon them suddenly, while they are unaware |
26:203 | | Then they will say, “Will we be granted respite? |
26:204 | | Do they seek to hasten Our Punishment |
26:205 | | Consider: if We grant them enjoyment for years |
26:206 | | and there comes upon them that which they were promised |
26:207 | | of what avail to them will be that which they were made to enjoy |
26:208 | | And never did We destroy a town save that it had warners |
26:209 | | as a reminder; and We did no wrong |
26:210 | | And the satans did not descend with it |
26:211 | | nor is it fitting for them, nor are they able |
26:212 | | Indeed, they are debarred from hearing [it] |
26:213 | | So call not upon another god along with God, lest thou be among the punished |
26:214 | | And warn thy tribe, thy nearest kin |
26:215 | | and lower thy wing to the believers who follow thee |
26:216 | | And should they disobey thee, say, “Truly I am quit of that which you do. |
26:217 | | And trust in the Mighty, the Merciful |
26:218 | | Who sees thee when thou standest [to pray] |
26:219 | | and thy movement amid those who prostrate |
26:220 | | Truly He is the Hearing, the Knowing |
26:221 | | Shall I inform thee of those upon whom the satans descend |
26:222 | | They descend upon every sinful liar |
26:223 | | eavesdropping, and most of them are liars |
26:224 | | And as for the poets, the errant follow them |
26:225 | | Hast thou not considered that they wander in every valley |
26:226 | | and that they say what they do not do |
26:227 | | Not so those who believe and perform righteous deeds, and remember God much, and help one another after having been wronged. And those who do wrong shall know to what homecoming they will return |
