| Arabic | | يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِن نَّفْعِهِمَا وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الْآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُون |  |

| [the] intoxicants | l-khamri | الْخَمْرِ | خ م ر | |
| and [the] games of chance | wal-maysiri | وَالْمَيْسِرِ | ى س ر | |
| "In both of them | fīhimā | فِيهِمَا | ف ى | |
| (is) a sin | ith'mun | إِثْمٌ | ا ث م | |
| great, | kabīrun | كَبِيرٌ | ك ب ر | |
| and (some) benefits | wamanāfiʿu | وَمَنَافِعُ | ن ف ع | |
| for [the] people. | lilnnāsi | لِلنَّاسِ | ن و س | |
| But sin of both of them | wa-ith'muhumā | وَإِثْمُهُمَا | ا ث م | |
| (is) greater | akbaru | أَكْبَرُ | ك ب ر | |
| (the) benefit of (the) two." | nafʿihimā | نَفْعِهِمَا | ن ف ع | |
| And they ask you | wayasalūnaka | وَيَسْءَلُونَكَ | س ا ل | |
| they (should) spend. | yunfiqūna | يُنْفِقُونَ | ن ف ق | |
| "The surplus." | l-ʿafwa | الْعَفْوَ | ع ف و | |
| Thus | kadhālika | كَذَلِكَ | ذ ل ك | |
| makes clear | yubayyinu | يُبَيِّنُ | ب ى ن | |
| [the] Verses | l-āyāti | الْءَايَاتِ | ا ى ا | |
| so that you may | laʿallakum | لَعَلَّكُمْ | ل ع ل ل | |
| ponder, | tatafakkarūna | تَتَفَكَّرُونَ | ف ك ر | |
