| | Hamid S. Aziz rendition of Surah Mary(Maryam) --- |
---|
19:1 | | KAF HA YA AIN SAD |
19:2 | | A mention of your Lord´s mercy to His servant Zachariah |
19:3 | | When he called on his Lord in secret |
19:4 | | Praying, "My Lord! Verily, my bones are weak, and my head shines with grey hair; but I never was unfortunate in my prayers to Thee, my Lord |
19:5 | | But I fear my kinsfolk after me, since my wife is barren; then grant me from Thy presence a successor |
19:6 | | To be my heir (or true representative) and the heir (or true representative) of the family of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, one with whom you are well-pleased." |
19:7 | | (The answer came), "O Zachariah! Verily, We give you glad tidings of a son, whose name shall be John. None by that name have We distinguished before." |
19:8 | | Said he, "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have become decrepit through old age?" |
19:9 | | He said, "Thus it will be. Your Lord says, ´It is easy for Me, for I created you at first when yet you were nothing.´" |
19:10 | | Said he, "O my Lord! Give me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you shall not speak to any man for three nights, though you are sound." |
19:11 | | Then he went forth unto his people from the chamber, and he made signs to them, "Glorify your Lord at break of day and fall of night." |
19:12 | | (And it was said to his son) " O John! Hold fast the Book", and We gave him Wisdom even as a boy |
19:13 | | And compassion from Our Presence, and purity; and he was devout (pious, righteous) |
19:14 | | And kind to his parents, and was not arrogant and rebellious |
19:15 | | So peace upon him the day he was born, and the day he died, and the day he shall be raised up to life again |
19:16 | | And mention Mary in the Book; when she retired from her family into an eastern chamber |
19:17 | | And she took a veil (to screen herself) from them; and We sent unto her Our Angel (or spirit); and he assumed for her the semblance of a perfect man |
19:18 | | Said she, "Verily, I take refuge in the Merciful One from you, if you are god-fearing." |
19:19 | | Said he, "I am only a messenger of your Lord to bestow on you a pure son." |
19:20 | | Said she, "How can I have a boy when no mortal has touched me, and when I am no harlot?" |
19:21 | | He said, "Thus says your Lord, ´It is easy for Me! And We will make him a revelation unto mankind, and a mercy from Us; for it is a thing ordained (or decreed)." |
19:22 | | So she conceived him, and she retired with him into a remote place |
19:23 | | And the labour pains came upon her at the trunk of a palm tree, and she said, "O that I had died before this, and become a thing of naught, forgotten!" |
19:24 | | Then one called to her from beneath her "Grieve not, for your Lord has placed a stream beneath your feet |
19:25 | | And shake towards you the trunk of the palm tree, it will drop upon you fresh ripe dates |
19:26 | | So eat, and drink, and be consoled; and if you should see any mortal say, "Verily, I have vowed to the Beneficent One a fast, and I will not speak to-day to any mortal." |
19:27 | | Then she brought him (her son) to her people, carrying it. Said they, "O Mary! You have done an amazing (abominable) thing |
19:28 | | "O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a bad man, nor was your mother a harlot!" |
19:29 | | Then she pointed to him, and they said, "How are we to speak with one who is a baby in the cradle?" |
19:30 | | He (the baby) said, "Verily, I am a servant of Allah; He has brought me the Book (revelation), and He has made me a prophet |
19:31 | | "And He has made me blessed wherever I am; and He has required of me prayer and charity as long as I live |
19:32 | | And has made me kind towards my mother, and not arrogant (tyrannical) and miserable |
19:33 | | And peace upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised up alive." |
19:34 | | Such was Jesus, the son of Mary. This is the statement of truth concerning which they doubt (or dispute) |
19:35 | | It befits not the Majesty of Allah that he should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a matter He only says to it, "BE," and it is |
19:36 | | And, lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord (see John 20:17), so worship Him; this is the Straight Way |
19:37 | | And the sects among them disagree, but woe to those who disbelieve from the meeting of the mighty Day |
19:38 | | How plainly will they see and hear on the day when they shall come to Us; but today the evildoers are in manifest error |
19:39 | | And warn them of the Day of Sighs (Anguish, Regret, Distress) when the matter is determined. Now they are heedless, and believe not |
19:40 | | Verily, We will inherit the earth and all who are upon it, and unto Us shall they return |
19:41 | | And mention Abraham in the Book; verily, he was a saint (a man of truth, a true witness), a prophet |
19:42 | | When he said to his father, "O my sire! Why do you worship what can neither hear nor see nor avail you aught |
19:43 | | "O my Sire! Verily, to me has come knowledge which has not come to you; so follow me, and I will guide you to a Straight and Level Way |
19:44 | | "O my Sire! Serve not Satan; verily, Satan is ever a rebel against the Beneficent One |
19:45 | | "O my Sire! Verily, I fear that there may afflict you punishment from the Beneficent One, and that you may be a comrade (or client) of Satan." |
19:46 | | Said he, "What! Do you reject (or hate) my gods, O Abraham? Verily, if you do not desist I will certainly stone you; but get you gone from me for a long time!" |
19:47 | | Said he, "Peace be upon you! I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Verily, He is to me most gracious |
19:48 | | "I will part from you and what you call on beside Allah, and will pray unto my Lord. It may be that in my prayer unto my Lord, I shall not be unblest." |
19:49 | | And when he had parted from them and what they served beside Allah, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and each of them We made a prophet |
19:50 | | And We bestowed on them of Our Mercy, and We granted them lofty honour on (or from) the tongue of truth |
19:51 | | And mention Moses in the Book; verily, he was chosen, and was a Messenger, a prophet |
19:52 | | We called him from the right side of the Mount (Sinai); and We made him draw nigh unto Us to commune with him |
19:53 | | And We granted him out of Our Mercy, his brother Aaron also a prophet |
19:54 | | And mention Ishmael in the Book; verily, he was true to his promise, and was a messenger and a prophet |
19:55 | | He used to enjoin on his people prayers and charity, and was most acceptable (sacrifice) in the sight of his Lord |
19:56 | | And mention, in the Book, Idris (Enoch?); verily, he was a saint and a prophet |
19:57 | | And We raised him to a lofty place |
19:58 | | These are those to whom Allah has been gracious, of the prophets of the seed of Adam, and of those whom We carried with Noah, and of the seed of Abraham and Israel, and of those We guided and elected. When the revelations of the Beneficent were recited u |
19:59 | | But there succeeded after them a later generation who have ruined worship and have followed lusts (prejudices, fantasies, greed, self-interest, superstition), but they shall at length face deception (or failure, destruction) |
19:60 | | Save such as repent and believe and act right; for these shall enter the Garden and shall not be wronged in aught |
19:61 | | Gardens of Eden, which the Beneficent has promised to His servants in the Unseen; verily, His promise ever comes to pass |
19:62 | | They shall hear no empty (vain) talk therein, but only Peace; and there they shall have their provision morning and evening |
19:63 | | Such is the Garden which We will give for an inheritance to those of our servants who are devout |
19:64 | | (The angels say), "We descend not save at the command of your Lord; His is what is before us, and what is behind us, and what is between these; for your Lord is never forgetful |
19:65 | | "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between the two; so serve (worship) Him and persevere in His service. Do you know of any worthy of His Name |
19:66 | | Man will say, "What! When I have died shall I then come forth alive?" |
19:67 | | But then does not man remember that We created him before when he was naught |
19:68 | | And by your Lord! We will, without doubt, gather them together, and the devils (or evil ones) too; then will We surely bring them forth on their knees round about Hell |
19:69 | | Then shall We certainly drag, out from every sect, whichever of them has been most obstinately rebellious against the Beneficent |
19:70 | | And surely We are best aware of those who are most deserving to be broiled therein |
19:71 | | There is not one of you who will not go down to it (the Fire), that is a fixed Decree of your Lord |
19:72 | | Then We will save those who fear Us; but We will leave the evildoers therein on their knees |
19:73 | | And when Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of the two parties (your s or mine) is best placed and in the best company?" |
19:74 | | And how many generations before them have We destroyed who were better off in property and outward appearance |
19:75 | | Say, "Whoever is in error, the Beneficent will extend to him until they see what they are threatened with, whether it be the torment in this world or whether it be the Hour (of Doom in the Hereafter), then they shall know who is worse placed and wea |
19:76 | | And those who seek guidance, Allah will increase their guidance. And enduring good works are best with your Lord for a reward, and best for restoration (or eventual returns) |
19:77 | | Have you seen him who disbelieves in Our signs, and says, "I shall surely be given wealth and children?" |
19:78 | | Has he become acquainted with the Unseen, or has he made a pact with the Beneficent |
19:79 | | Not so! We will write down what he says, and We will extend for him a span of torment |
19:80 | | And We will make him inherit that whereof he spoke, and he shall come to Us alone |
19:81 | | They take other gods besides Allah to be their source of power |
19:82 | | Not so! They shall deny their worship of them, and shall become their opponents |
19:83 | | Do you not see that We have sent the devils against the disbelievers, to confound them with confusion |
19:84 | | So be not you hasty with them. Verily, We do but number them a sum (of days) |
19:85 | | On the Day when We will gather the righteous unto the Beneficent, honoured as a goodly company |
19:86 | | We will drive the guilty into hell, like thirsty herds to water |
19:87 | | They shall have no power of intercession, save him who has taken a covenant with his Lord |
19:88 | | They say, "The Beneficent has taken to Himself a son." |
19:89 | | Assuredly, you have brought a monstrous thing |
19:90 | | Whereby the heavens are almost torn asunder, and the earth is riven, and the mountains fall in ruin |
19:91 | | That you attribute to the Beneficent a son |
19:92 | | When it is not becoming to the majesty of the Beneficent that he take to Himself a son |
19:93 | | There is none in the heavens or the earth but comes to the Beneficent as a servant |
19:94 | | Verily, He knows them and numbers them exactly |
19:95 | | And each one of them come unto Him on the Day of Resurrection, alon |
19:96 | | Verily, those who believe and act aright, on them the Beneficent bestows love |
19:97 | | We have made the Scripture easy on your tongue, only that you may thereby give glad tidings unto those who ward of evil, and warn thereby a contentious people |
19:98 | | How many a generation before them have We destroyed? Can you find any one of them, or hear a whisper of them |
