قَالَتِ الأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُلْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَإِنْ تُطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لاَ يَلِتْكُمْ مِنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْئا ً إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُور ٌ رَحِيم ٌ
Qālati Al-'A`rābu 'Āmannā Qul Lam Tu'uminū Wa Lakin Qūlū 'Aslamnā Wa Lammā Yadkhuli Al-'Īmānu Fī Qulūbikum Wa 'In Tuţī`ū Allāha Wa Rasūlahu Lā Yalitkum Min 'A`mālikum Shay'āan 'Inna Allāha Ghafūrun Raĥīmun
The Nomads said: We believe. Say: You have not believed; but you should say: We have submitted, for belief has not yet entered into your hearts. If you obey God and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللاَّتَ وَالْعُزَّى
'Afara'aytumu Al-Lāta Wa Al-`Uzzá
Have you considered Allaat and Al-`Uzzah?

May it be that? Would that! Particle of desire and expressing a wish impossible to be realized. It is one of those particles which like anna require a following noun to be an accusative.

وَلَئِنْ أَصَابَكُمْ فَضْل ٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَه ُُ مَوَدَّة ٌ يَالَيْتَنِي كُنتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزاً عَظِيما ً
Wa La'in 'Aşābakum FaĐlun Mina Allāhi Layaqūlanna Ka'an Lam Takun Baynakum Wa Baynahu Mawaddatun Yā Laytanī Kuntu Ma`ahum Fa'afūza Fawzāan `Ažīmāan
And if grace from God benefits you, he will speak as if there had not been affection between you and him: "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I would have triumphed a great triumph."
6:27
وَلَوْ تَرَى إِذْ وُقِفُوا عَلَى النَّارِ فَقَالُوا يَا لَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلاَ نُكَذِّبَ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Wa Law Tará 'Idh Wuqifū `Alá An-Nāri Faqālū Yā Laytanā Nuraddu Wa Lā Nukadhdhiba Bi'āyāti Rabbinā Wa Nakūna Mina Al-Mu'uminīna
And if you could see when they are standing over the Fire, they say: "If only we could be sent back, we would not deny the revelations of our Lord, and we would be believers!"
18:42
وَأُحِيطَ بِثَمَرِه ِِ فَأَصْبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى مَا أَنفَقَ فِيهَا وَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَى عُرُوشِهَا وَيَقُولُ يَالَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّي أَحَدا ً
Wa 'Uĥīţa Bithamarihi Fa'aşbaĥa Yuqallibu Kaffayhi `Alá Mā 'Anfaqa Fīhā Wa Hiya Khāwiyatun `Alá `Urūshihā Wa Yaqūlu Yā Laytanī Lam 'Ushrik Birabbī 'Aĥadāan
So his fruits were ruined, and he began turning his hands at that which he had spent on it while it remained destroyed upon its branches. And he said: "I wish I had not set up any partner with my Lord!"
19:23
فَأَجَاءَهَا الْمَخَاضُ إِلَى جِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ قَالَتْ يَالَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَذَا وَكُنتُ نَسْيا ً مَنْسِيّا ً
Fa'ajā'ahā Al-MakhāĐu 'Ilá Jidh`i An-Nakhlati Qālat Yā Laytanī Mittu Qabla Hādhā Wa Kuntu Nasyāan Mansīyāan
Then the birth pains came to her, by the trunk of a palm tree. She said: "I wish I had died before this, and became totally forgotten!"
25:27
وَيَوْمَ يَعَضُّ الظَّالِمُ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ يَقُولُ يَالَيْتَنِي اتَّخَذْتُ مَعَ الرَّسُولِ سَبِيلا ً
Wa Yawma Ya`aĐĐu Až-žālimu `Alá Yadayhi Yaqūlu Yā Laytanī Attakhadhtu Ma`a Ar-Rasūli Sabīlāan
And that Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hand and say: "I wish I had taken the path with the messenger!"
25:28
يَاوَيْلَتِي لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ فُلاَناً خَلِيلا ً
Yā Waylatī Laytanī Lam 'Attakhidh Fulānāan Khalīlāan
"Woe to me, I wish I did not take so and so as a friend!"
28:79
فَخَرَجَ عَلَى قَوْمِه ِِ فِي زِينَتِه ِِ قَالَ الَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنيَا يَالَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَا أُوتِيَ قَارُونُ إِنَّه ُُ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيم ٍ
Fakharaja `Alá Qawmihi Fī Zīnatihi Qāla Al-Ladhīna Yurīdūna Al-Ĥayāata Ad-Dunyā Yālayta Lanā Mithla Mā 'Ūtiya Qārūnu 'Innahu Ladhū Ĥažžin `Ažīmin
Then he came out among his people draped in his ornaments. Those who preferred this worldly life said: "Oh, if only we were given similar to what Qaroon has been given. Indeed, he is very fortunate."
33:66
يَوْمَ تُقَلَّبُ وُجُوهُهُمْ فِي النَّارِ يَقُولُونَ يَا لَيْتَنَا أَطَعْنَا اللَّهَ وَأَطَعْنَا الرَّسُولَا
Yawma Tuqallabu Wujūhuhum Fī An-Nāri Yaqūlūna Yā Laytanā 'Aţa`nā Allāha Wa 'Aţa`nā Ar-Rasūlā
On the Day when their faces will be turned over in the Fire, they will say: Oh, we wish we had obeyed God, and obeyed the messenger
36:26
قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ يَالَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ
Qīla Adkhuli Al-Jannata Qāla Yā Layta Qawmī Ya`lamūna
It was said: Enter the Paradise. He said Oh, how I wish if only my people knew!
43:38
حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَنَا قَالَ يَالَيْتَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ الْقَرِينُ
Ĥattá 'Idhā Jā'anā Qāla Yā Layta Baynī Wa Baynaka Bu`da Al-Mashriqayni Fabi'sa Al-Qarīnu
Until he comes to Us, he will say, Oh, I wish that between you and me was the distance of the two easts. What a miserable associate!
69:25
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَه ُُ بِشِمَالِه ِِ فَيَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَابِيهْ
Wa 'Ammā Man 'Ūtiya Kitābahu Bishimālihi Fayaqūlu Yā Laytanī Lam 'Ūta Kitābīh
As for him who is given his record in his left, he will say: Oh, I wish I never received my record,
69:27
يَا لَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِيَةَ
Yā Laytahā Kānati Al-QāĐiyaha
I wish the end had been final,
78:40
إِنَّا أَنذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابا ً قَرِيبا ً يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاه ُُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَالَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابا ً
'Innā 'Andharnākum `Adhābāan Qarībāan Yawma Yanžuru Al-Mar'u Mā Qaddamat Yadāhu Wa Yaqūlu Al-Kāfiru Yā Laytanī Kuntu Turābāan
I have warned you of a retribution which is close, the Day when man will look at what he has brought forth and the rejecter will say: I wish I were dust!
89:24
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي
Yaqūlu Yā Laytanī Qaddamtu Liĥayātī
He says: I wish I had worked towards my life!
