73:1  O you, wrapped in your cloak

73:2  Rise and stand the night [in prayer]— except a little

73:3  Half of it, or lessen a little from it—

73:4  or add on to it. And impart the Quran harmoniously by its [divinely] harmonized impartation.

73:5  Of certain, WE are to bring to bear upon you a momentous word.

73:6  Truly, the night’s vigil is most impactful, and most foundational of words.

73:7  Indeed, a lengthy occupation [waits] for you in the day.

73:8  And remember the name of your Rabb and commit yourself unto HIM, severed from the worldly.

73:9  Rabb of the East and the West. There is no deity except HIM, so take HIM as trustee.

73:10  And persevere over what they say and avoid them with a graceful avoidance.

73:11  And leave ME and the truth-beliers— holders of the worldly blessings. And allow them respite, a meager while.

73:12  Indeed, fetters and a blaze (jaḥīm) are in OUR realm

73:13  and choking food and an agonizing punishment.

73:14  On a day [set], the earth and the mountains will convulse, and the mountains will have become a strewn dune.

73:15  Surely, WE have sent a messenger unto you all as a witness over you, just as WE sent a messenger unto Pharaoh.

73:16  And then Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger. So, WE seized him in a calamitous seizing.

73:17  How then, if you have disbelieved, are to you steer clear on a day which is to render children grey—

73:18  The sky split open by it. Ever is HIS promise fulfilment bound.

73:19  Surely, this is a reminder. So then let whosoever wills, take a way unto his Rabb.

73:20  Your Rabb does indeed know that you stand [in prayer] [just] shy of two thirds of the night, or a half, or a third of it. And a group of the ones who are with you. While Allah measures out the night and the day, HE has known that you are not counting it, so HE has relented unto you. So, recite howsoever much of the Quran is easy to do. HE has known that there will be some among you in sickness, and others out on errands in the land in quest of the bounties of Allah, and others fighting in the Way of Allah. So, recite howsoever much of it is easy to do. Maintain the Prayers for anchor and give Zakat and lend Allah a beautiful loan. Whatever of any good you send ahead for your souls; you shall find it with Allah. It is a better and transcendent reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Surely, Allah is forgiving, ever merciful.
