You can SEARCH IslamAwakened:
5:1
Believers, fulfill your obligations. Livestock animals are lawful for you to eat, except for what We will describe to you. You are not allowed to hunt while you are in a state of pilgrimage. God commands what He wants.
5:2
Believers do not violate the rituals concerning God’s sacraments, the sacred month of pilgrimage, or the offerings, and do not prevent those who are going to the Sacred House from seeking favor, pleasure, and acceptance from their Lord. Once your pilgrimage is over, then you are free to hunt. Never let your hatred for the people who barred you once from the Sacred Sanctuary provoke you to transgress. Help one another in furthering virtue and God-consciousness, and do not encourage one another to commit sin and aggression. Always be mindful of God because His punishment is severe.
5:3
You are forbidden to eat the meat of animals found already dead, blood, pork’s meat, or any animal slaughtered in the name of any other than God. Also forbidden is the animal that has been strangled or beaten to death or killed by a fall or gored to death, or what is partly eaten by a predator unless you can still properly slaughter it. You are also forbidden to eat the meat of animals slaughtered before idols. It is forbidden for you to draw lots since this is a deviation (from God’s commands). The unbelievers have lost all hope of you ever forsaking your faith. Do not be afraid of them, but stand in awe of Me. Today I have perfected your faith for you and have shed My grace upon you and have chosen submission [Islam] to be your faith. But whosoever is driven to a sin (what is forbidden) by dire necessity and not by an inclination to disobey; then surely God is the Most Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.
5:4
They will ask you [Prophet] what is lawful for them. Say, “All good things are lawful to you, including what you have taught your birds and beasts of prey to catch, teaching them as God has taught you. You may eat what they catch for you, but invoke God’s name over it, and always be mindful of God.” He is quick to take account.
5:5
Today, all the good things of life have been made lawful for you. The food of the people of the Book is lawful to you just as your food is lawful to them. Virtuous, believing women are lawful to you as well as virtuous women from the People of the Book, provided that you give them their bridal gifts and marry them-- not taking them as lovers or secret mistresses. The deeds of anyone who rejects faith [in God] will amount to nothing, and in the Hereafter, they will be among the losers.
5:6
Believers, when you are about to pray, wash your face, your hands, and arms up to the elbows. Pass your wet hands lightly over your head and wash your feet up to the ankles. After sexual intercourse, purify yourselves. If you are ill, or are traveling, or have just relieved yourself, or have had intimate contact with a woman and cannot find water, then take some pure dust and use it to wipe your face and hands. God does not wish to place any burden on you but wants to make you pure and to perfect His grace on you so that you may be thankful.
5:7
Always remember God’s grace on you and your pledge that binds you to Him when you said, “We hear, and we obey.” Always be mindful of God. God is fully aware of what is in your hearts.
5:8
Believers, be steadfast in your devotion to God, equitably bearing witness to the truth. Never let hatred for any people lead you to deviate from being just to them. Be just, for that is closer to being mindful of God. Always be mindful of God. God is well aware of what you do.
5:9
God has promised forgiveness and rich rewards to those who have faith and do good works
5:10
whereas; those who deny Our revelations and lie are destined for the blazing fire.
5:11
Believers, remember how God favored you when certain people were about to attack you, and He protected you from them. Be always mindful of God. Let the believers put their trust in Him.
5:12
God took a pledge from the Children of Israel. We appointed twelve of them as leaders. And God said, “I am with you. If you are regular in prayer, give the purifying alms, and believe in My Messengers and support them and lend God a good loan, I will cleanse you of your bad deeds and admit you into Gardens with flowing rivers. After this, any of you who deny the truth will be far from the right path.”
5:13
But, because they broke their pledge, We rejected them and hardened their hearts. They distorted the meaning of the revealed words, and they have forgotten a lot of what they have been told to remember. You will always find deceit in all but a few of them. Forgive them and forget. God loves those who honor Him by forgiving.
5:14
And We also took the pledge from those who say: “We are Christians,” but they have forgotten part of what they were told to keep in mind. So We tempted them with enmity and hatred, to last until the Resurrection Day when God will explain to them what they have done.
5:15
People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you. He will make clear much of what you concealed of the Book and overlook much. Enlightenment has now come to you from God and a clear Book.
5:16
With it God guides those who follow what pleases Him to ways of peace, and by His permission, He will bring them out from the darkness of ignorance into enlightenment and will guide them to a straight path.
5:17
Those who say, “God is the Messiah, the son of Mary,” are defying the truth. Say, “If it had been God's will, could anyone have prevented Him from destroying the Messiah, son of Mary, together with his mother and everyone else on Earth?” God has control over the heavens and the Earth and everything in between. He creates whatever He wants and has power over all things.
5:18
The Jews and the Christians say, “We are God’s children and His loved ones.” Say to them, “Why does He punish you for your transgressions? No, you are only human beings of His creation. He forgives whomever He wills and punishes whomever He wills, for God has control over the heavens and the Earth and everything in between. All journeys lead to Him.”
5:19
People of the Book, after a long time during which no messengers have appeared, Our Messenger comes to you now to make the truth clear to you, so you should not say, “No one has come to give us good news or to warn us.” Someone did come to you to give you good news and to warn you. God has the power to do all things.
5:20
Moses said to his people, “My people, remember God’s blessing on you when He raised prophets among you and appointed kings for you and gave you what He had not given anyone else in the world.
5:21
My people, enter the holy land, which God has promised you; but do not turn back, or then you will be doomed.”
5:22
They answered, “Moses, there are ferocious people in this land. We will not enter it until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter.”
5:23
Two men from among those who feared God, and whom God had blessed, said, “Enter through the gate, for as soon as you enter, you will be victorious. If you are true believers, you must place your trust in God.”
5:24
They said, “Moses, we will never enter while they are still there. Go forward with your Lord and fight, and we will stay here.”
5:25
Moses said, “Lord, I do not have control over anyone except my brother and myself. Judge between those defiantly disobedient people and us.”
5:26
God said, “The land is forbidden to them for forty years, during which they will wander for forty years, aimlessly about the land. Do not grieve over those who disobey.”
5:27
[Prophet] tell them the truth about the story of Adams’ two sons-- how each of them offered a sacrifice, it was accepted from one of them, and not accepted from the other. One said, “I will kill you!” The other replied, “God only accepts the sacrifice of those who are mindful of Him.
5:28
Even if you try to kill me, I will not try to kill you. I fear God, the Lord of all the worlds .
5:29
I would rather that you bear the burden of my sins as well as yours. Then you will be destined for the fire. That is the destiny of the unjust.”
5:30
His selfishness caused him to murder his brother. He killed him and became doomed.
5:31
God sent a raven to scratch the ground to show him how to cover his brother’s body. He cried out, “How awful! Am I so helpless that I cannot do what this raven has done?” He then buried his brother and was filled with sorrow.
5:32
Because of this, We decreed to the Children of Israel that if anyone kills a human being, unless it is in punishment for murder or for spreading corruption on Earth, it will be as though he killed all of the human beings. And, if anyone saves a life, it will be as though he had saved the lives of all human beings. Our Messengers came to them with evidence of the truth. Yet, many of them continued to corrupt the Earth by their overindulgence.
5:33
Those who wage war against God and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption on Earth should be punished by death, crucifixion, the amputation of their hands and their feet, or should be entirely banished from [the face of] the Earth. Such is their disgrace in this world. In the Hereafter, a terrible punishment awaits them--
5:34
except for those who repent before you overpower them. You must bear in mind that God is the Most Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.
5:35
Believers, remain mindful of God, seek ways to come closer to Him, and strive for His cause so that you may prosper.
5:36
If the unbelievers possess all that is on Earth, and twice as much, and offer it to ransom themselves from suffering on the Resurrection Day, it will not be accepted from them: they will have a painful punishment.
5:37
They will wish to come out of the fire, but they will not come out of it. It will be everlasting punishment.
5:38
As for the men and women who steal, cut off their hands (from access) as punishment for what they have done, it is a deterrent ordered by God. God is Revered, Wise.
5:39
As for him who repents after having done wrong and makes amends, God will accept his repentance. God is the Most Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.
5:40
Do you not know that control of the heavens and the Earth belongs to God? He punishes whomever He wills and forgives whomever He wills. God has the power to do anything.
5:41
Messenger, do not be saddened by those who rush to disbelief, those who say “We believe,” and do not have any faith in their hearts. And those from among the Jews who eagerly listen to any lies from those who have never met you. They distort the meaning of the words, taking them out of their context, saying, “If you have already been given this [in your Scriptures], accept it, but if you have not, then be on your guard!” Do not be saddened by them, for if God wills someone to be tempted by evil, you will not be able to do anything for them. These are the ones whose hearts God is not willing to cleanse. They will be disgraced in this world and will have terrible suffering in the Hereafter.
5:42
They eagerly listen to lies and greedily profit from all that is evil. If they come to you [Prophet] for judgment, you can either judge between them or decline, for if you decline, they cannot harm you in any way. If you do judge, then, judge between them equitably: God loves those who are equitable.
5:43
Why do they come to you for judgment, seeing that they have the Torah with God’s Law? Even then, they will turn away from your judgment. These are not true believers.
5:44
We revealed the Torah with guidance and enlightenment. The prophets, who had submitted to God, judged according to it for the Jews. So did the rabbis and the scholars, all judged according to that part of God’s Book, they were entrusted to preserve, and to which they were witnesses. So do not fear people. Only fear Me. Do not trade my verses for a small profit. Those who do not judge according to what God has revealed are unbelievers.
5:45
In the Torah, we prescribed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and similar retribution for wounds. However, If anyone forgoes this out of charity, it will serve as atonement for them. Those who do not judge according to what God has revealed are unjust.
5:46
We sent Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow in the footsteps of those earlier prophets, confirming what was available of the Torah. We gave him the Gospel. It has guidance and enlightenment, confirming what was available of the Torah. It has guidance and warning for those who are mindful of God.
5:47
Let the followers of the Gospel judge according to what God has revealed in it. Those who do not judge in light of what God has revealed are disobedient (to God).
5:48
[Prophet] We sent you the Book, setting forth the Truth, confirming what is available of earlier revelations and with final authority over them. Judge between them following what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the Truth revealed to you. To each of you, We have assigned a law and a way of life. If God had wanted, He could have made you a single community, but instead, He is testing you using what He has revealed to you. So, be forward with all that is good. You will all return to God, and He will clarify these matters about which you have differed.
5:49
[Prophet] Judge between them according to what God has revealed, and do not follow their whims. Be cautious. Do not let them tempt you away from what God has revealed to you. If they turn away, remember it is God’s will to repay them for some of the transgressions they have committed. A great many people are deviant from God’s path.
5:50
Do they want judgment according to the age of ignorance? Who could be a better judge than God for those who are firm in faith?
5:51
do not take the Jews and Christians as protectors. They only protect one another, and whoever allies himself with them becomes one of them. God does not guide such unjust people.
5:52
You [Prophet] will see those with perverse hearts rushing to them and saying, “We are afraid that fortune may turn against us.” God may bring about good fortune for the believers, or He may not. Then they will be overcome with remorse for the thoughts that they secretly harbored.
5:53
The believers will say to one another, “Are these the same men who swore by God with their most solemn oath that they were with you? All they did was in vain, and they lost everything.”
5:54
Believers, if you ever abandon your faith, God will replace you with people He loves and who love Him, people who are meek toward the believers, prideful toward the unbelievers. People who strive hard in God’s cause and do not fear being blamed by anyone. Such is God’s grace, which He grants to whomever He wills. God has boundless grace and knowledge.
5:55
Your protector is God, His Messenger, and the believers-- those who are constant in prayer, pay the prescribed purifying alms, and bow down in worship.
5:56
All who ally themselves with God and His Messenger and the believers, it is they the partisans of God who will be victorious.
5:57
Believers, do not take as protectors people who mock your faith and make fun of it, whether they are people who were given the Book before you or who are unbelievers, and remain mindful of God if you are believers.
5:58
When you make a call to prayer, they mock it and make fun of it because they are people who do not use reason.
5:59
Say, “People of the Book, do you resent us for any reason other than that we believe in God and what He has revealed to us and what He revealed before us, or is it only because most of you deviated from God’s path?”
5:60
Say, “Will I tell you, in the sight of God, who deserves worse punishment than these? They whom God has rejected and whom He condemned and turned into apes and pigs because they worshipped the powers of evil. They are worse in rank and farther astray from the right path.”
5:61
When they come to you, they say, “We believe.” However, they come denying the truth and leave in the same state. God is fully aware of all they conceal.
5:62
You [Prophet] can see many of them outdoing one another in sin and hostility and making illegal profits.
5:63
If only their rabbis and scholars would stop them from speaking sinfully and accepting illicit payments. Their deeds are so evil!
5:64
Some among the Jews said, “God is tight-fisted!” tied were their fists, and they were cursed for what they said. God’s fists are wide open; He gives as He pleases. What has been revealed to you [Prophet] from your Lord will only cause many of them to be more stubborn in their arrogance and their denial of the truth. We have incited enmity and hatred among the People of the Book until Resurrection Day. Whenever they kindle the fires of war, God extinguishes them, and they work hard at spreading corruption on Earth. God does not love corrupters.
5:65
If the People of the Book would only truly believe and be mindful of God! We would wipe away their former evil deeds and bring them into Gardens of delight;
5:66
and if they would truly observe the Torah and the Gospel and all that has been revealed to them by their Lord, they would have been given an abundance of grace from heaven and Earth. Some of them are on the right course, but most of them do what is evil.
5:67
Prophet, proclaim everything that has been sent down to you from your Lord, for unless you do it fully, you will not have delivered His message. God will protect you from men. God does not guide people who refuse to acknowledge the truth.
5:68
Say, “People of the Book, You have no valid ground for your beliefs, unless you [truly] observe the Torah and the Gospel, and all that has been sent to you from your Lord.” Yet all that has been revealed to you [Prophet] by your Lord is bound to make many of the People of the Book more stubborn in their arrogance and their denial of the truth. Do not worry about unbelievers.
5:69
The believers, as well as the Jews, the Sabeans, and the Christians: all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds, will have nothing to fear, and they will not grieve.
5:70
We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, and We sent messengers to them. Every time a messenger came to them with anything that was not to their liking, they rebelled. They accused some of them of lying and killed others.
5:71
Thinking that they would not be harmed, they became blind and deaf. God turned to them in mercy, yet many of them again became blind and deaf. God sees everything that they do.
5:72
Those who say, “God is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have defied God. The Messiah himself said, “Children of Israel, worship God. He is my Lord as well as your Lord.” If anyone associated others with God, He would not permit them to enter Heaven. Their destiny will be Hell. No one can help such unjust people.
5:73
Those who say, “God is the third of three” are denying the truth because there is only One God. Unless they stop saying this, a painful punishment will happen to those of them who are determined to deny the truth.
5:74
Why do they not turn towards God in repentance and ask for His forgiveness? God is the Most Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.
5:75
The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger. All [other] messengers had passed away before him, and his mother was one who never deviated from the truth. They both ate food. See how clear We make these messages for them and how deluded their minds are.
5:76
Say, “How can you worship something other than God that has no power to harm or to benefit you when God alone is All-Hearing, All-Knowing?”
5:77
Say, “People of the Book, do not overstep the bounds of Truth in your religious beliefs. Do not follow the whims of the people who went astray before you. They have led many others astray, and they continue to stray from the right path.”
5:78
Those of the Children of Israel who defied God and denied the truth have been cursed and rejected by the words of David and Jesus, the son of Mary because they disobeyed and persistently overstepped the limits.
5:79
They did not prevent each other from doing hateful things. Their deeds were so evil!
5:80
You [Prophet] see many of them allying themselves with the unbelievers. How evil is what their souls make them do! God has condemned them, and they will remain in punishment forever.
5:81
If they [truly] believed in God and their Prophet and all that was revealed to them, they would not take the unbelievers for their allies: but most of them have deviated from God’s path.
5:82
You [Prophet] are sure to find that the most hostile to the believers are the Jews, as well as those who are bent on ascribing partners to God. While you will find that the nearest in affection towards the believers are those who say, “We are Christians,” because there are priests and monks among them and because they are not arrogant.
5:83
For, when they hear what has come down to this messenger, you can see their eyes tear up because they recognize the Truth in it, and they say, “Lord, we do believe. Make us one with all who bear witness to the Truth.
5:84
How can we not believe in God and the Truth that came to us when we desire that our Lord include us among the righteous?”
5:85
For saying this, God will reward them with Heavenly Gardens with flowing rivers where they will permanently abide, for this is the reward for those who do good.
5:86
Whereas, those who reject the truth and deny Our messages are destined for the blazing fire.
5:87
Believers, do not forbid the good things which God has made lawful to you but do not transgress. Indeed, God does not like transgressors.
5:88
Partake of the lawful and good things which God has provided for you and be mindful of God in whom you believe.
5:89
God does not hold you accountable for oaths thoughtlessly sworn, but He will take you to task for earnestly sworn oaths. So, the breaking of an oath must be atoned by feeding ten disabled persons with the same food as you would want for your own family, or by clothing them, or by freeing a slave, and if a person cannot find the means to do this, he will fast for three days. This will be the atonement for your oaths whenever you have sworn [and broken them]. Be careful with your oaths. God makes His messages clear to you so that you may be grateful.
5:90
Believers, intoxicants, gambling, idolatry, and fortune-telling are repugnant and evil acts. They are evil acts of Satan. Avoid them so that you may prosper.
5:91
With intoxicants and gambling, Satan only seeks to incite hostility and hatred among you and to turn you away from remembering God and from prayer. Will you give them up?
5:92
Obey God and obey the Messenger, and always be careful! If you pay no attention, know that Our Messenger’s only duty is the clear delivery of the message.
5:93
Those who believe and do righteous deeds will not be blamed for what they may have eaten, so long as they are mindful of God and believe and do righteous deeds, and continue to be mindful of God and to believe and grow ever more mindful of God and persevere in doing good: God loves those who do excellent deeds.
5:94
Believers, God is sure to tempt you with wild games that come, within reach of your hands and weapons, so He can identify those who fear Him, even though they think He is not watching. Whoever oversteps the limits will have a painful punishment.
5:95
Believers, do not hunt while you are in the state for sanctity. Whoever kills an animal intentionally must compensate by offering an equivalent domestic animal comparable to what he killed as defined by two just men—an offering to be delivered to the Ka’bah. Or, he may atone for his sin by feeding disabled persons or by fasting an equivalent number of days so that he may understand the seriousness of what he has done. God forgives what is past, but if anyone does it again, God will punish him severely. God is Revered and Capable of Revenge.
5:96
It is permitted for you to catch and eat seafood. It is a provision for you as well as for travelers. Hunting on land while you are in the state of pilgrimage is forbidden to you. Be mindful of God to whom you will be gathered.
5:97
God has made the Ka’bah, the Sacred House, a sanctuary for human beings, and the Sacred Months, the animals for sacrifice and their garlands so that you will be aware that God knows about all that is in the heavens and the Earth. God knows about everything.
5:98
Know that God is severe in His punishment, and yet He is the Most Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.
5:99
The Messenger's only duty is to deliver the message, and God knows what you reveal and what you hide.
5:100
Say [Prophet], “The bad and the good are not equal, even though many of the bad things may greatly please you. People of understanding, be mindful of God so that you may prosper.”
5:101
Believers do not ask about matters that would trouble you if disclosed to you. But, if you ask about them while the Qur’an is being revealed, they will be made known to you. God has absolved [you from any obligation] in this respect. God is Most-Forgiving and Forbearing.
5:102
People before your time have asked such questions. Then later, they rejected the answers.
5:103
God has not ordained that certain kinds of cattle should be designated Bahirah, Saibah, Wasilah, or of Hami , and set aside from the use of man, yet the unbelievers invent lies about God. Most of them do not use reason.
5:104
When they are told, “Accept what God has sent down and the Messenger,” they answer, “What we inherited from our forefathers is enough for us.” Their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided.
5:105
Believers, you are only responsible for yourselves; those who go astray cannot harm you if you are on the right path. All of you will return to God, and He will tell you what you have being doing (to hold you responsible for it).
5:106
Believers, when death approaches you, let two just men from among you act as witnesses to the writing of your will. If death approaches you while you are traveling far from home, let two just men from among other people act as witnesses. Take hold of the two men after having prayed and, if you have any doubt in your mind, let each of them swear to God, “We will not sell our word for any price, even if it were for the sake of a near relative. We will not hide God’s testimony, or else We will be counted among the sinful.”
5:107
If it is discovered that these two are sinning (guilty of false testimony), then two others will stand up in their station from among those who are the most deserving, nearest in kinship. They both swear by God, saying, “Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not committed perjury, because that would make us unjust.”
5:108
It will be more likely that people will offer the truth in their testimony because they will be afraid that others might refute their oaths. Remain mindful of God and listen. God does not guide those who are defiantly disobedient.
5:109
On the Day when God assembles all the messengers and asks, “What response did you receive?” They will answer, “We do not know. You alone know these unseen things.”
5:110
God will say, “Jesus, son of Mary, remember the grace which I bestowed upon you and your mother? How I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit so you could speak from your cradle and as a grown man? [Remember] when I taught you the Book, the Wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel? [Remember] when, with My permission, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, with My permission, a bird? [Remember] when, with My permission, you healed the blind person and the leper; when, by My permission, you brought the dead back to life? [Remember] when I kept the Children of Israel from harming you when you came to them with all the evidence of the truth. When those of them who were bent on denying the truth said, “This is nothing but deception”?
5:111
And [mention] when I inspired the disciples to believe in Me and My Messenger? They answered, “We believe and bear witness that we submit ourselves to You.
5:112
And [mention] when the disciples said, “Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send us a feast from heaven?” [Jesus] answered, “Remain mindful of God, if you are [truly] believers.”
5:113
They said, “We wish to eat from it so that our hearts might be reassured and that we might know that you have told us the truth and be among those who witness it.”
5:114
Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “God, our Lord, send us a meal from heaven so that we can have a recurring celebration for the first and the last of us, and a sign from You. Provide for us because You are the best of providers.”
5:115
God answered, “I will send it down to you, but anyone who denies the truth after this will be punished with a punishment that I will not inflict on anyone else in the world.”
5:116
God said, “Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to people, ‘Worship my mother and me as gods instead of God’?” [Jesus] answered, “May You be exalted in Your limitless glory. It is not for me to say what I have no right to say. Had I said this, You would have known it. You know all that is within me, whereas I do not know what is in You. It is You alone who has full knowledge of unknown things.
5:117
I told them only what You commanded me to say, “Worship God, who is my Lord as well as your Lord.” I was a witness to them during my time with them. But after you made me die, You were the one watching over them. You witness everything.
5:118
If you punish them, they are Your worshipers, and if You forgive them, You alone are the Revered, the Wise.”
5:119
[On Judgment Day] God will say, “Today, the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. They will have Gardens with flowing rivers, where they will abide forever. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the supreme triumph!”
5:120
The kingdom of the heavens and the Earth and everything in them belongs to God. He has power over all things.
