40:2
The revelation of the timeless Book [of Scripture] is from Allah, the Almighty, the Ever Knowing.
40:3
The forgiver of the [repented] trespass and the acceptor of the repentance, firm of requital, possessor of all might. There is no god, except
HE and unto
HIM is the end [of all journeys].
40:4
None contest the signs of Allah, except the ones who have disbelieved. So, do not let their unfettered sway in the territories delude
you.
40:5
Before them, the people of Noah had denied [him], and [so too] the various cobbled coalitions after them. And every set of people obsessed over their messenger, that they could seize him, and they contended with all false means attempting to muffle the Truth. For that,
I seized them. So then, how [fitting] was
MY requital?
40:6
Thus, has the word of
your Rabb been justly true against the ones who had disbelieved: they are reapers of the fire.
40:7
Those who bear the Throne and such as who are in its aura, in reverent adulation, with praise of their
Rabb, and
keep Faith in
HIM and ask forgiveness for the ones who have believed, “Our
Rabb,
YOU have encompassed all things with mercy and knowledge. So, forgive the ones who have repented and follow
YOUR path and spare them the punishment of
Jaḥīm—
40:8
O our
Rabb. And do admit them into the Gardens of Eden, which
YOU promised them, and [do admit] whoever did right from among their forefathers and their spouses and their offspring. Surely,
YOU are the almighty, the all-wise.
40:9
And spare them their ills, and one whose ills
YOU spare that day—he indeed YOU have graced with mercy. And that is the transcendent attainment.”
40:10
Hearken! Those who had disbelieved will be called out: “Allah’s abhorrence is greater than your [present] abhorrence of yourselves, for disbelieving when you were called to Faith.”
40:11
They said, “Our
Rabb,
YOU have given us death twice and
YOU have given us life twice. Now we have acknowledged our trespasses. So then is there any way out?”
40:12
Thus it is, because whenever Allah is cited for HIS ONENESS, you disbelieve, while if partners are associated with
HIM, you believe. [Thus it will be] for the judgment is for Allah [alone], the supremely Exalted, the Transcendent.
40:13
HE is the ONE
WHO shows you
HIS signs and continuously sends down sustenance for you from the sky— but none mindfully reflects, except one who penitently turns to HIM.
40:14
So, invoke Allah, being ever sincere to
HIM in Faith, even if the disbelievers be averse.
40:15
Transcendent of all degrees, Owner of the Throne.
HE confers the Spirit by
HIS command upon whomever of
HIS devotees
HE wills, so
HE may warn of the Day of Facing—
40:16
A day they will emerge. Nothing of them becomes unknown to Allah. To whom belongs the sovereignty this day? Unto Allah— the One, the Supreme Subduer.
40:17
This day every soul will be recompensed according to what it earned. Not any wrong whatsoever this day. Surely, Allah is swift of reckoning.
40:18
Warn them of a day of the Ever imminent, when the hearts will be right alongside the throats, choking. The wrongdoers will have neither a pal, nor an intercessor to be complied with.
40:19
HE knows of the duplicity of eyes and [
HE knows] what the breasts conceal.
40:20
Allah judges with the [sole] Truth and Justice, while those whom they invoke besides
HIM, they do not judge with anything. Indeed, Allah alone is the all-hearing, the all-seeing.
40:21
Have they not traveled the land to have seen how the end-fate of the ones who were before them was? They were more intense than them in strength and more impactful across the earth. Then Allah seized them for their trespasses, and they had none ever to shield them from Allah.
40:22
That was because their messengers were coming to them with telling proofs, yet they disbelieved. So, Allah seized them. Indeed,
HE is all-powerful, firm of requital.
40:23
And
WE did send Moses with
OUR signs and with evident authority—
40:24
unto Pharaoh, and
Haman, and
Qārūn— [to which] they said: “A lying wizard.”
40:25
So then when [Moses] came to them with the Truth directly from
US, they said, “Slay the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their females alive.” Not [ever] is the plan of the disbelievers aught except one conceived in error.
40:26
And Pharaoh said, “Leave it to me to slay Moses and let him call unto
HIS Rabb. I do fear that he may change your religion or that he may make this rot prevalent in the land.”
40:27
While Moses said, “I have taken refuge with my
Rabb and your
Rabb from every self-conceited one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”
40:28
And a believing man from Pharaoh’s lineage, who was concealing his faith, said, “Are you all going to kill a man for saying, ‘Allah is my
Rabb,’ while he has already come to you with telling proofs from your
Rabb? If he is lying, then upon him bears his lie, but if he is truthful, then something of what he forewarns you of will afflict you. Harken, Allah does not guide any lyingly reckless one.
40:29
O my people the dominion is yours today, as the torchbearers in the land. So [for no other recourse available to us] who will help us against a calamitous punishment of Allah if it comes upon us?” Said, Pharaoh, “I show you nothing except what I see, and I guide you to nothing except a path of the proper conduct.”
40:30
Said he who had embraced Faith, “O my people, I truly fear for you the like of a day of the [prophet-denying] coalitions
40:31
In likeness of the pattern of the people of Noah and
Aad and
Thamūd and those who came after them. While Allah wants not any wrong to
HIS free-willed servants.
40:32
And O my people, I indeed fear for you the Day of Mutual Calling—
40:33
A day you will turn back in flight. Not do you have anyone defender against Allah. And whoever Allah leaves astray— for him is not any guide.
40:34
And before, Joseph did indeed come to you with telling proofs, but you did not cease being distrustful about what he brought to you. Eventually when he died [without a successor prophet] you said, ‘Allah will not appoint a messenger after him.’ Thus does Allah set astray any doubt-driven profligate
40:35
Those who contest the signs of Allah, without any authority having come to them—that is immensely abhorrent in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who have embraced Faith. Thus does Allah imprint upon the heart of every coercive self-conceited one.”
40:36
And Pharaoh said, “O Haman build me a lofty pavilion, so I may attain the means—
40:37
the means to the heavens— and thereby inform myself about the God of Moses, though I am quite sure that [Moses] is a liar. Thus, was made fair seeming to Pharaoh the depravity of his deed and he was barred from the Way. The scheme of Pharaoh was to end in nothing but perishment.
40:38
And said the one who had embraced Faith, “O my people follow me, I will guide you to the path of rectitude.
40:39
O my people, this earthly life is only a temporal indulgence, while the Hereafter is indeed the home of lodgment.
40:40
Whoever has committed a misdeed, he will be requited by nothing else but with its like. And whoever— man or woman— has labored righteously and is a believer, they will enter Paradise and therein they will be given sustenance, beyond reckoning.
40:41
O my people, what [other option] do I have? I call you to Salvation, while you call me to the fire.
40:42
You call me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with
HIM what I have absolutely no knowledge of. I call you unto the Almighty, the ever-forgiving Supreme Forgiver.
40:43
There is not a doubt that you are calling me toward that which has no invocation in the world nor in the Hereafter, and that our reversion is to Allah, and that the prodigals are the reapers of the fire.”
40:44
So [for its truth,] you will soon recall what I am saying to you. I entrust my undertaking unto Allah. Verily, Allah is all seeing of
HIS devotees.”
40:45
Thus, Allah spared him from whatever ills they had plotted, while the ilk of Pharaoh was claimed by the worst of the punishments—
40:46
The Fire. They are presented to it morning and evening. And on the day the Hour takes effect [it will be said]: “Make the ilk of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment.”
40:47
And when they argue amongst themselves in the fire, the ones who were dependent on others, will say to the ones who had claimed supremacy, “We were your followers, so will you be our shields from a portion of the fire?”
40:48
Those who had claimed supremacy said, “We—all and every bit of us—are in it. Allah has already judged between
HIS free-willed servants.”
40:49
And the ones in the fire said to the keepers of
Jahannam, “Pray to your
Rabb that
HE relieves us from the punishment for a day.”
40:50
They said, “Did there not come to you, your messengers, with telling proofs.” They responded, “Yes indeed.” They said, “Then you pray!” Though what is the prayer of the disbelievers except one rooted in error?
40:51
WE are certain to help
OUR messengers and those who embraced Faith during earthly life, and on the day the witnesses take their stand—
40:52
The day their pardon pleas are not to avail the wrongdoers, and for them is the denunciation [denying them any divine blessing] and worst of the homes.
40:53
WE did bestow Guidance on Moses and
WE made the children of Israel inherit the timeless Book [of Scripture]:
40:54
A guidance and a reminder for the seekers of the essence.
40:55
So, persevere. Certainly, the promise of Allah is ever true. Ask forgiveness for
your imperfection and [lift your soul] with the praise of
your Rabb with the drawing night and the dawning day.
40:56
Verily, those who contest the signs of Allah, without any authorization having come to them— in their bosoms is nothing but a false greatness. Not are they in any way attainers of it. So, seek refuge with Allah. Verily,
HE is the all-hearing, the all-seeing.
40:57
The very creation of the heavens and the earth transcends the creation of humankind, but most of humankind know not.
40:58
The blind and the insightful one, do not match up. The ones who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds [do aspire to a higher level], whereas the one engaged in sin does not. Little do you bear in mind!
40:59
Of certain, the Hour is bound to come— not any doubt in that. But most of humankind believe not.
40:60
While your
Rabb has said, “Call unto
ME, I will respond to you. Surely, those who are away from
MY worship, being arrogantly defiant — they will soon be entering
Jahannam, abjectly.”
40:61
Allah is the One
WHO has made the night for you that you to be tranquil therein, and the day an enabler of sight. Surely, Allah is the Real Owner of the bounty upon humankind. But most of humankind are not grateful.
40:62
That is Allah— your
Rabb. Creator of each thing. There is no god except
HE. So whence and how are you being hoodwinked?
40:63
Thus are hoodwinked the ones who repudiate the messages of Allah.
40:64
Allah is the One who made the earth a lodgment for you and the sky a canopy, and
HE shaped you and beautified your forms, and provided sustenance for you from pristine things. That is Allah, your
Rabb. So then, Allah is the Source of all blessings, the
Rabb of all realms.
40:65
HE is the Ever Living— there is no god but
HE. So then, call
HIM, ever sincere unto HIM in Faith: All praise belongs to Allah,
Rabb of all realms.
40:66
Say, “Verily, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah, now that telling proofs have come to me from my
Rabb. I am commanded that I surrender myself to the
Rabb of all realms.
40:67
HE is the One
WHO created you from dust, then from a drop of semen, then from a leech-like clot, then
HE brings you forth as an infant, then [
HE wills] that you attain to your fullest strength, then that you be old. And among you are those collected [in death] earlier. And [
HE wills] that you reach a definite term, and that you acquire understanding.
40:68
HE is the One Who gives life and gives death. So then, when
HE decrees a matter,
HE merely says to it, “Be,” and it is.
40:69
Have you not looked at the ones who contest the signs of Allah? How and which way have they been disorientated?
40:70
— the ones who denied the timeless Book [of Scripture] and what
WE sent down
OUR messengers with. Soon then, they are to know:
40:71
When the shackles are in their necks along with the chains— thus dragged
40:72
in fluids bereft of mercy [
Ḥamīm] and then in the fire, made its burning fill.
40:73
Furthermore, it was said to them, “Where is that which you were counting as God
40:74
other than Allah?” They said, “They have forsaken us. Rather, we were heretofore not calling to anything [real].” Thus, Allah leaves the disbelievers astray.
40:75
That because you reveled in the land unjustly and because you were in the pursuit of mere merriment.
40:76
Enter the gates of
Jahannam, as abiders therein, for misery is the dwelling of the arrogant.”
40:77
So, persevere [O Prophet]. Certainly, the promise of Allah is ever true. Whether
WE duly show
you some of what
WE have promised them, or
WE duly collect
you [in death]— unto
US they are being returned.
40:78
WE did send messengers before
you. Among them are such about whom
WE have narrated to
you, and among them are such about whom
WE have not narrated to
you. It is not ever for a messenger that he comes with a sign, except with the leave of Allah. Then when Allah’s command has come, judgment will have been justly passed, and then and there the purveyors of falsehood would have lost [it all].
40:79
Allah is
HE WHO has made the domestic animals for you, some to ride on, and some for you to eat of.
40:80
And for you are benefits in them; that you may set out upon them to attain a cherished want held in your bosoms— and on them, and on vessels are you carried.
40:81
And
HE shows you all
HIS signs. So, which of
HIS signs do you refuse to acknowledge?
40:82
Have they not traveled the land, and so seen how the end-fate of the ones before them was? They were more numerous than them, and stronger in might, and [more durable was] the legacy they left behind across the land. So then, whatever they were earning availed them not.
40:83
For when their messengers came to them with telling proofs, they reveled in the [aspect of] Knowledge which was with them [and rejected their messengers]. And they were besieged by what they belittled.
40:84
Then when they saw
OUR might, they said, “We have believed in Allah—
HIS ONENESS— and we have renounced all that through which we were associators with God.”
40:85
Then [at that stage] their faith was not to benefit them— not when they got to see
OUR might! [It is] Allah’s way which has passed through time across
HIS free-willed servants. There then, the disbelievers had lost it all.
