39:1  The sending down of the timeless Book is from Allah, the Almighty, All-wise.
39:2  Surely, WE have sent down to you the timeless Book with the Truth. So, serve Allah, ever sincere to HIM in Faith.
39:3  Unquestionably, Pure Faith belongs to Allah. Whereas the ones who take protectors besides HIM [say], “We do not worship them except in order that they may move us toward Allah in nearness.” Verily, Allah will decide between them wherein they differ. Certainly, Allah does not guide one who is an ingrate liar.
39:4  Had Allah intended to take a son, HE could have chosen at will from whatever HE creates! Limitless is HE in HIS BEING and glory. HE is Allah, the One, the Supreme Subduer.
39:5  HE created the heavens and the earth in [expression of the] Truth. HE winds the night over the day, and HE winds the day over the night. And HE has put the Sun and moon in compliance, each on course for a definite term. Is HE not the almighty, the ever-forgiving supreme Forgiver?
39:6  HE created you from a single soul then HE made its mate from it, and HE sent down for you of livestock, eight paired mates. HE creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation following creation, within three layers of darkness. Such is your Rabb. Unto HIM belongs the sovereignty. There is no god but HE. So how and which way are you being disorientated?
39:7  If you are ungrateful [you have not grasped the truth about your dependence], for [the truth is that] Allah is independent of you. HE does not approve of HIS free-willed servants’ ingratitude. And if you are grateful, HE approves that in you. No bearer will bear the burden of another and in time unto your Rabb is your defined return. Then, HE is to tell you about what you were doing. Surely, HE is ever knowing of the bosoms’ inner holdings.
39:8  When an adversity scuffs man, he calls out to his Rabb, turning penitently unto HIM. Then when HE confers upon him a blessing of HIS, he forgets what it was for which he was calling unto HIM before, and sets up peers to Allah, to mislead [others] from HIS path. Say, “Indulge in your ingratitude a little. Verily, you are of the reapers of the fire.”
39:9  Is one who is devoutly obedient, prostrating and standing during the hours of the night, knowing the gravity of the Hereafter, and hoping for the mercy of HIS Rabb [the same as one who is ungrateful for HIS blessings]? Say, “How can they match up— those who know and those who do not know?” Only seekers of the essence engage in mindful reflection.
39:10  Say, [God says], “O MY devotees who have believed, be conscious of your Rabb. For those who selflessly do good in this world there is good, and Allah’s earth is vast. Verily, the patient and persevering will be fully repaid— beyond reckoning.”
39:11  Say, “I have been commanded that I serve Allah, ever sincere to HIM in Faith.
39:12  And I have been commanded in order that I be the first of the ones in submission [to HIM].
39:13  Say, “I do fear— if I should disobey my Rabb— the punishment of a transcendent day.
39:14  Say, “Allah do I worship, ever sincere to HIM in my faith.
39:15  So, you worship what you will besides HIM.” Say, “Verily, the losers are those who lose their own selves and their families on the day of Resurrection. Is that not the plainest loss?
39:16  For them overhead are shades of the fire itself, and underneath them are shades [of the fire]. Through that Allah instills fear in HIS devotees. “O MY devotees, be then conscious of ME.”
39:17  And the ones who steer away from all false beliefs and overlords, lest they serve them, and do turn repentantly toward Allah— the glad tidings are for them. So, give glad tidings unto MY devotees.
39:18  The ones who listen deeply to the Word and are thus moved to follow its highest teaching— those are the ones whom Allah has guided. And those very ones are seekers of the essence.
39:19  Did anyone upon whom the sentence of punishment was justly due [ever listen]? Are you then to rescue one in the fire?
39:20  But the ones who are dutifully conscious of their Rabb, for them are mansions, and built-up mansions above them, rivers flowing beneath them. A promise of Allah. Allah does not break the promised tryst.
39:21  Have you not seen that Allah sent down water from the sky, then HE has injected it into wellsprings in the earth? Further to that, HE makes the seed sprout with it—different are its colors! Then it spurs on abuzz, and then you see shades of saffron. Then HE renders it into chaff. Verily, therein is a rich reminder for seekers of the essence.
39:22  Is then one whose bosom Allah has opened wide to Islam [i.e., submission unto God], so he is guided by a light from his Rabb [like one without knowing]? Woe, then unto those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah. They are plainly astray.
39:23  Allah has sent down the best of all discourses, as a book, evocative and reiterative. The skins, of the ones in awe of their Rabb shiver from it. Then their skins and hearts grow soft, attuned to the remembrance of Allah. Such is Allah’s guidance. HE guides with it whom HE wills and whoever HE sets astray—for him there is not any guide.
39:24  Is then one who will fend off the worst of the punishment in his face on the Day of Resurrection, [the same as one rightly guided]? It will be said to the wrongdoers, “Partake of what you were earning.”
39:25  Those before them also denied [their messengers], and so their punishment came upon them from whence they did not perceive.
39:26  [For their denial] Allah made them taste humiliation in the earthly life, whereas the certain punishment of the Hereafter is greater— if they were to know.
39:27  And in this Quran, WE have indeed pointed out for humankind, from every example [of an individual], to enable them to thoughtfully reflect
39:28  [on the] Arabic Quran, bereft of any flaw, to enable them to acquire consciousness of God.
39:29  Allah sets forth the example: a man, in him are partners spitefully at odds amongst themselves, and a man in harmony, owing to one man. Do they match up for comparison? All praise is owed to Allah. Though indeed, most of them do not know.
39:30  Of certain you are bound to die, and for certain they are bound to die.
39:31  Then on the Day of Resurrection, before your Rabb, will you [all] contend.
39:32  So then, who could be more wrongful than one who has attributed a lie to Allah and denied the Truth when it came to him? Is not in Jahannam an [appropriate] dwelling for the disbelievers?
39:33  And he who has come with the Truth and [he who] has lived believing in it— they are the God-conscious.
39:34  For them with their Rabb, is whatever they will for. That is the reward of the ones who do good in selfless devotion to God,
39:35  that Allah may efface from them the worst of what they did and reward them with the best of what they were doing.
39:36  Is not Allah ever sufficing for HIS devotee? And they frighten you with other than HIM! Whoever Allah leaves astray— for him is not any guide.
39:37  And whosoever Allah guides— for him is not any misleader. Is not Allah with almightiness, the owner of retribution?
39:38  If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will readily say, “Allah.” Say, “Have you then considered what you call unto other than Allah? If Allah intended some harm for me, are they [the false gods] to be the removers of HIS harm? Or if HE has intended some mercy for me, are they to be the withholders of HIS mercy?” Say, “Allah suffices for me. On HIM, the trusting place their trust.”
39:39  Say, O my people work according to your respective positions, I am a worker, at work. For you are going to know
39:40  upon whom a chastisement is to come, disgracing him, and upon whom a standing punishment will fall due.”
39:41  Surely, WE have revealed upon you the timeless Book for all humankind, in [expression of] the Truth. So, whoever has acquired guidance— it is only for his own soul. And whoever gets lost in error— he errs only against it. And you are not a trustee over them.
39:42  Allah collects the souls at the time of their deaths and [collects] the ones not dead while in their sleep. Then HE keeps the ones upon whom HE has decreed death and releases others until a defined term. Verily, in that are profound signs for a people who reflect.
39:43  Or have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say, “Even though they control nothing, and they have no sense?”
39:44  Say, “The intercession, all aspects of it, is up to Allah. To HIM belongs the dominion of heavens and the earth. Furthermore, you are to be returned to HIM.”
39:45  When Allah— HIS ONENESS— is mentioned, the hearts of the ones who do not believe in the Hereafter close tight, and when those others besides HIM are mentioned, they immediately take delight.
39:46  Say, “O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, knower of the unseeable and the evident— YOU will judge between YOUR devotees about what they were differing in”
39:47  And if it were that the ones who did wrong had whatever is on the earth all together, and the like of it alongside it, they would surely offer it as ransom [to save themselves] from the worst of the punishments on the Day of Judgment. And what they were not accounting for, became evident from Allah.”
39:48  And the dark deeds which they had earned did become evident to them. And engulfed they were, by what they were belittling.
39:49  Now when a hardship scuffs man, he calls unto US. Then when WE confer a blessing from US upon him, he says, “I have been given this on the basis of a knowhow.” Nay! It is a test but most of them do not realize.
39:50  Those before them had said that too. So then, of no avail to them was what they were earning.
39:51  So, the dark deeds which they had earned befell them. And the ones amongst these here who have done wrong, soon the dark deeds which they have earned will befall them. And they are not to be thwarters [of what is to befall them].
39:52  Do they not realize that Allah expands the provision for whom HE wills, and HE [alone] measures it out? Surely, in that are meaningful signs for a people who believe.
39:53  Say, “[God says], ‘O MY devotees who have committed excesses against their own souls, dishearten not of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives the trespasses [HE deems have been repented for], all together. Verily, HE is the forgiving, the ever merciful’.”
39:54  Turn toward your Rabb in repentance and surrender unto HIM before the punishment comes upon you. Thereafter you will not be helped.
39:55  And follow the highest teaching of what has been sent down upon you from your Rabb. [Follow] before the sudden arrival of the punishment upon you, while you are unawares
39:56  lest a soul says, “O, my regrets over what I had neglected through [my] sidelining of Allah, and I was definitely one of the mockers.”
39:57  Or [lest] a soul says, “Were it that Allah had guided me, I would surely have been of the conscientious.”
39:58  Or [lest] it says the moment it sees the punishment, “Were it that there was a second chance for me— I would be of the ones who do good in devotion to God.”
39:59  “Not ever! MY messages had already come to you, and you in turn had given them the lie, and you had waxed arrogant, and you were of the ungrateful ones.”
39:60  On the day of Judgement, you will see the ones who lied against Allah, their faces darkened. Is the [appropriate] dwelling of the arrogant ones not in Jahannam?
39:61  And Allah will deliver the ones who were conscious of HIM on account of their spiritual triumphs. No ill will touch them, and neither will they grieve.
39:62  Allah is the Creator of everything, and HE is the trustee over everything.
39:63  To HIM belong the reins of the heavens and the earth, and they who disbelieve in the signs of Allah— it is they who are the losers.
39:64  Say, “Do you then bid me to worship other than Allah, O you the ignorant ones?
39:65  It has been revealed to you and unto those before you: If [any of] you ascribe a partner to God, your work will most certainly perish here, and you shall surely be of the losers—
39:66  Nay! Do then worship Allah [alone] and be of the grateful.”
39:67  They have not grasped the measure [of the almightiness of] Allah, by the right of HIS [immeasurable] measure. The land in its entirety will be in HIS seizure on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens folded in HIS right hand. Limitless is HIS glory and exalted is HE above anything they associate with HIM.
39:68  And [the souls] were blown into the forms— whereupon whoever was in the heavens and whoever was on the earth fell in a swoon, excepting whoever Allah had willed. Then blown therein another time, whereupon they were up on their feet, looking.
39:69  The land shone with the light of its Rabb, and the record was laid out and the Prophets were brought forward, and the witnesses. And judgment between them was rendered with the Truth. And they are not wronged.
39:70  Each soul was paid in full for what it did. And HE is best knowing of what they do.
39:71  Those who had disbelieved were urged on towards Jahannam, in audiences. Eventually, when they arrived at it, its doors were opened, and the keepers said unto them, “Did not a messenger from amongst you come to you reciting the verses of your Rabb and [was he not] warning you of the tryst of this day of yours?” They replied, “Yes indeed! But deserved was the word of punishment upon the disbelievers.”
39:72  It was said, “Enter the doors of Jahannam, abiders therein.” For wretched is the dwelling of the arrogant ones.
39:73  Those who were conscious of their Rabb were driven towards paradise, in audiences. Eventually when they arrived at it— and its doors had been opened— its keepers said to them, “Peace [Salaam] be upon you. You were pure [of Faith]. So, enter [Paradise] abidingly.”
39:74  And they said, “All praise belongs to Allah WHO made HIS promise come true for us and HE has granted us the inheritance of the land. We get to claim of the Garden for our home, wherever we wish.” And thus [was realized], how excellent is the reward of the ones who labored [in HIS way].
39:75  And you see the angels surrounding the aura of the Throne, in reverent adulation, with praise of their Rabb. And it was conclusively judged between them with the Truth, and it was said, “All praise belongs to Allah, the Rabb of all realms.”
