33:1
O Prophet, be ever conscious of Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allah is ever knowing, all-wise.
33:2
And follow what has been revealed to
you from
your Rabb. Surely, Allah is ever aware of what you do.
33:3
And place
your trust in Allah. Sufficient is Allah as Trustee.
33:4
Allah has not placed two hearts in a man’s interior, and
HE has not made your spouses, whom you renounce, your mothers. And
HE has not made your adopted [sons] your sons. That is your expression with your mouths. Allah states the reality, and
HE shows the way.
33:5
Call them after their fathers. That is more equitable with Allah and if you do not know their fathers then they are your brothers and your fellow adherents in Faith. And there is not an offense attributable to you through any mistake you may have made regarding it but [through] what your hearts had premeditated. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
33:6
The Prophet is more entitled to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers [in Faith]. Blood relatives, in Allah’s timeless decree, are more entitled to each other than the believers and the emigrants, except that you act with your allied friends with fairness and empathy. That is etched in the timeless Book.
33:7
And when
WE took from the Prophets their covenant— from
you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, son of Mary,
WE took from them an inviolably sacred covenant—
33:8
That
HE may ask the truthful about the truth of them. And for the disbelievers
HE has proportioned an agonizing punishment.
33:9
O you who have embraced Faith, recall
HIS blessing upon you when the [enemy] forces came upon you. Thereupon,
WE sent against them wind and forces [such as] you did not see. Allah is ever insightful of what you do.
33:10
[Recall] when they came upon you from above you and from below, and when your eyes mustered not the sight, and the hearts reached the throats, and you were supposing about Allah the suppositions [of yours]—
33:11
There [in that instance] the believers were put through a trial— shaken by a severe jolt
33:12
[It was a time] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts festered a disease said, “Allah and
HIS messenger have promised nothing except a delusion.”
33:13
And when a party of them said, “O dwellers of Yathrib, this is not a stand for you to make, so go back.” And a group from amongst them sought the Prophet’s permission, saying, “Our homes are vulnerable,” while they were not anywise vulnerable. They merely intended to flee.
33:14
And had they been invaded from its perimeters and then asked to commit sedition— they would have surely committed it, and would not have struggled with it, except with ease.
33:15
And they did make a pledge to Allah heretofore, not to turn their backs. Surely, a pledge made to Allah is ever to be answered for.
33:16
Say, “Never does the flight gain you [life], if you had fled from the death or the killing [not decreed for you]. And in that case, you are not to be indulged with earthly life, except a little.
33:17
Say, “Who is there who can shield you from Allah, whether
HE wills any setback for you, or wills mercy for you.” They will not find for themselves, other than Allah, a protector, or a helper.
33:18
Allah already knows the obstructionists amongst you, and the ones saying to their brethren, “Come on over unto us.” And they do not advance to the brunt [of the battle], except a little,
33:19
being stingy toward you [believers]. Then when the fear [of battle] besets,
you see them looking at
you [imploringly], their eyes rolling, like one who is blacked out from death. But when the fear departs, they lash at you with their tongues, stingy over the boon. They have not embraced Faith. So, Allah has nullified their doings and that is ever easy for Allah.
33:20
They think the coalition army [of the enemies] have not gone away, and if the coalition army were to come [back], they would yearn that they were roaming far in the desert amongst the desert nomads, asking about news of you all. And had they been in your midst, they would not have fought in battle except sparingly.
33:21
You indeed have for yourselves in the Prophet of Allah, a beautiful role-model— for anyone who counts on Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much and often.
33:22
When the believers saw the coalition army, they said, “This is what Allah and
HIS Messenger had promised us. And Allah and
HIS Messenger did foretell the truth. And nothing increased in them, except faith and acceptance.
33:23
Among the believers are men who remained true to whatever they pledged to Allah. Then, of them are such as he who has fulfilled his pledge [with his life], and of them is such as he who awaits [his fate]. And they changed not [their pledge]— not one change
33:24
[Such tests happen] so that Allah may reward the truthful for their truthfulness and punish the hypocrites, if
HE so wills, or relent toward them. Of certain, ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
33:25
Allah repulsed the disbelievers, with all their rage, they attained no good. And Allah suffices the believers in all their battles. And ever is Allah powerful, almighty.
33:26
HE brought them down from their strongholds, those of the people of the timeless Book [of Scripture] who backed [the coalition]. And
HE instilled terror in their hearts, [with] you [believers] executing a faction and taking captive another faction.
33:27
And
HE made you inherit their land and property, and a land you had not set foot on. Allah is ever in almighty control over all things and their measure.
33:28
O Prophet, say to your wives, “If you desire the earthly life and its finery, then come I will provide for you and release you with a handsome release.”
33:29
While if you desire Allah and
HIS Messenger and the Home of the Hereafter, then indeed, Allah has proportioned a transcendent reward for the ones amongst you who do good in selfless devotion to God.
33:30
O wives of the Prophet, whoever amongst you commits an evident indecency, her punishment will be magnified two-fold. That is ever easy for Allah.
33:31
And whoever amongst you is devoutly obedient to Allah and
HIS Messenger and acts righteously, to her
WE will give her reward two times, and
WE have prepared a noble sustenance for her.
33:32
O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any of the women. If you are conscious of God, do not be so pliant in your speech, that it feeds the obsession of one with a festering disease in his heart. And speak an appropriate word.
33:33
Make yourself at home in your own houses and do not flaunt in the flaunting ways of the preceding age of ignorance. Maintain prayer for anchor and give
Zakat and obey Allah and
HIS Messenger. Allah intends only to purge from you— the people of the House— the moral grime [of past ways] and to purify you to immaculacy.
33:34
Remember what is recited in your homes from the verses of Allah and the wisdom [therein]. Know that Allah is ever unfathomable in
HIS ways, all-aware.
33:35
Surely, the Muslim men and the Muslim women, the believing men and the believing women, the devout men and the devout women, the truthful men and the truthful women, the patiently persevering men and the patiently persevering women, the reverent men and the reverent women, the men who give in alms and the women who give in alms, the men who fast and the women who fast, the men and women who guard their modesty, and the men who remember Allah much and often and the women who remember Allah— for them Allah has proportioned forgiveness and a transcendent reward.
33:36
It is not for believing men and neither for believing women, when Allah and
HIS Messenger have decided an affair, that they have their own say in their affair. Whosoever disobeys Allah and
HIS Messenger, has strayed into brazen error.
33:37
When
you spoke to him upon whom Allah bestowed favor and upon whom
you bestowed favor, “Bind yourself to your wife and be conscious of Allah,”
you were concealing within yourself what Allah made evident, and
you feared men while Allah has a better right that
you fear
HIM. Thus, when
Zayd had moved irrevocably past any desire of her,
WE married
you to her so that no sanction should attach to the believers regarding [marrying] the spouses of their adoptees— when they have moved irrevocably past any desire of their wives. And ever is the command of Allah fulfilment bound.
33:38
No restriction is upon the Prophet in what Allah has ordained for him. [It has been] the way of Allah across those who have passed away before. And ever is the command of Allah decreed fate.
33:39
[It is the way of Allah with] those who dutifully convey the messages of Allah and fear
HIM and do not fear anyone except
HIM. And Allah suffices as reckoner.
33:40
Muhammad is not a father of any of your men but is Allah’s messenger and the seal of the Prophets, and ever is Allah all-knowing of all things.
33:41
O you who have embraced Faith, remember Allah with much and frequent remembrance.
33:42
And contemplate
HIS limitless might and glory, [each] day’s start and the day’s end.
33:43
HE is
WHO showers blessings upon you [all]
, and
HIS angels [also do], so that
HE may take you [all] out of layers of darkness toward light, and
HE is ever merciful unto the believers.
33:44
On the Day they meet
HIM, their greeting is to be, “Peace.” And Allah has proportioned a noble reward for them.
33:45
O Prophet,
WE indeed have sent
you as a witness, a conveyer, and a warner,
33:46
And as one who invites to Allah with
HIS permission, and as a luminescent lamp.
33:47
Convey divine tidings to the believers that for them, from Allah, is transcendent grace.
33:48
And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and disregard their abuse, and rely on Allah. And Allah suffices as trustee.
33:49
O you who believe, when you marry believing women and then divorce them prior to having consummated your marriage with them, then upon them is no waiting period for you to count. So, provide for them, and do release them with a handsome release.
33:50
O Prophet,
WE have made lawful
your wives to
you, those to whom
you have given their rightful due, and those your right hand had possessed— of those Allah bestowed on
you. [And made lawful to
you are] the daughters of your paternal uncles, and daughters of your paternal aunts, the daughters of your maternal uncles and daughters of your paternal aunts, the ones who emigrated with
you. And [lawful to
you is] a believing woman if she offers herself [without any terms] to the Prophet, provided the Prophet desires to marry her. [This is] solely for
you, apart from the believers—
WE have indeed known what
WE have mandated upon them regarding their wives [and regarding] the ones possessed by their right hands— purposed to there being no restriction on
you. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
33:51
You may put off whom
you will from among them, or
you may betake to yourself whom
you will. And if
you were to seek of the ones
you had detached from, there is no offense attributable to
you. That is most fundamental— that their eyes be soothed, and they do not grieve and that they be pleased with what
you give to each of them. Allah knows what is in your hearts. Surely, ever is Allah knowing, forbearing.
33:52
Beyond that, women are not lawful to
you, nor [is it lawful] that
you replace them with other wives, even if
you were to be impressed by their beauty, except those your right hand has possessed. Surely, Allah is ever watchful over all things.
33:53
O you who have embraced Faith, do not enter the private living spaces of the Prophet, except there be an invitation for you to a meal— not to be onlookers of its preparation but when you are invited. Then when you have eaten, disperse and do not linger on, seeking discourse. That indeed has been troubling the Prophet— he is bashful with you, while Allah is not bashful with the Truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask from behind a veil. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. It is not for you to trouble the Messenger of Allah, nor that you ever marry his wives after him. Surely, that would be an enormity in the sight of Allah.
33:54
Whether you reveal a thing, or you conceal it, ever is Allah all-knowing of all things.
33:55
There is no offense attributable to them in regard to their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or those their right hands have possessed. [O wives of the Prophet] be ever conscious of Allah. Hearken! Allah is ever a witness over all things.
33:56
Surely, Allah and
HIS Angels shower blessings upon the Prophet. O believers invoke blessings upon him and accept [him and his message] wholeheartedly.
33:57
Surely, those who affront Allah and
HIS Messenger, Allah has denounced them in this world and in the Hereafter, and Allah has proportioned for them a humbling punishment.
33:58
And those who affront believing men and believing women with what they did not deserve, they have assumed the burden of a slander and a blatant sin.
33:59
O Prophet, say to your wives and to your daughters and to the women of the believers that they drop down over their selves, a part of their cloaks. That is most fundamental to their identification, so that they are not harassed. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
33:60
And if the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who fan false rumors in the City, do not desist,
WE will most specifically give
you cause against them, and then they will not be living as neighbors with
you therein, except [just that] little while—
33:61
Denounced, they will be seized wherever they are unearthed and wiped out to the last one.
33:62
[This has been] Allah’s way across those who have passed away before, and
you shall not find any change in the Way of Allah.
33:63
The people ask
you about the Hour. Say, “Its knowledge is only with Allah.” And what could make
you ascertain? The Hour may well be near.
33:64
Surely, Allah has denounced the disbelievers and proportioned a blaze for them
33:65
to abide therein beyond time. They shall find neither an ally, nor a helper.
33:66
On that day, their beings are turned inside out in the fire, they will say, “Oh would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.”
33:67
And they will say, “Our
Rabb, we did obey our honored leaders and our great ones— they led us astray from the Path.
33:68
Our
Rabb, give them twice the punishment and do denounce them with a tremendous denouncement.”
33:69
O you who have embraced Faith do not be like those who affronted Moses. Allah absolved him of all that they said. In the sight of Allah, he was ever of distinct honor.
33:70
O you who have embraced Faith, be conscious of Allah and speak the true and accurate word.
33:71
HE shall set aright your deeds for you and forgive you your trespasses. Whosoever obeys Allah and
HIS Messenger,
HE has indeed attained the transcendent attainment.
33:72
Surely,
WE had offered [to place] the Trust upon the Heavens and the earth and the Mountains— they declined to bear it and were apprehensive of it, while man bore it. Verily, he was ever an ignorant offender.
33:73
[For help, man has been sent Guidance], so that Allah may [justly] punish the men and women who are knowingly duplicitous, and men and women who worship false gods. And that Allah may relent toward the repentant believing men and believing women. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
