7:1  For this · Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, · · met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,
7:2  and to him Abraham alloted a tenth part of everything. Translated, his name means first, “king of righteousness,” then · it also means, “king of Salem,” that is, “king of peace.”
7:3  He is without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life; but like the Son of God he continues a priest for all time.
7:4  But see how great this man was to whom · the patriarch Abraham gave a tithe of the finest plunder.
7:5  And those of the sons of Levi who receive the priestly office have a mandate according to the law to collect a tithe from the people, that is, from · their fellow countrymen, although they too come from the loins of Abraham.
7:6  But this man who does not trace his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises.
7:7  It is without · any dispute that the person of lesser status is blessed by the one of greater status.
7:8  · In the one case, mortal men receive tithes, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.
7:9  And it could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, ·
7:10  for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met Abraham.
7:11  If, then, perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people had received the law), what further need would there have been for another kind of priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, · rather than one designated after the order of Aaron?
7:12  For whenever the priesthood is altered, there is necessarily an alteration in the law as well.
7:13  For the one of whom these things are said belongs to a different tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.
7:14  For it is perfectly clear that our Lord is descended from Judah, · and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
7:15  And it is even more obvious that if, according to the likeness of Melchizedek, another priest arises,
7:16  he does so not on the basis of a law expressed in a carnal commandment, but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.
7:17  For it is attested of him, “You are a priest for all time, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
7:18  For there is an annulment of a former commandment because of · its weakness and uselessness
7:19  (for the law made nothing perfect); but the introduction of a better hope through which we draw near to God.
7:20  And since this was not done without an oath (for others have become priests without an oath,
7:21  but he became a priest with an oath by the one who said to him, “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest for all time’”
7:22  accordingly Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
7:23  Now on the one hand, these many have become priests because they were hindered by death from continuing in office,
7:24  but on the other hand, Jesus, because he remains for all time, has a priesthood that is permanent. ·
7:25  Consequently, he is able to save completely · those who draw near to God through him, because he continually lives to intercede for them.
7:26  For such a high priest was appropriate for us, · one who is holy, innocent, undefiled; having been separated from · sinners, · he became exalted above the heavens.
7:27  He has no need to offer up daily sacrifices, like those other high priests, first for · their own sins and then for the sins of the people, for this he did once for all when he offered up himself.
7:28  For the law appoints men as high priests who have weaknesses, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints the Son who has been made perfect for all time.
