Contend in an altercation, dispute/litigate in a sound or valid manner, to say a thing such as may cause the listener to refrain/desist from his assertion/plea/claim, overcome someone in an altercation, antagonize, put a thing on the edge/side or corner of something.

وَقَالُوا أَآلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ هُوَ مَا ضَرَبُوه ُُ لَكَ إِلاَّ جَدَلا ً بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ
Wa Qālū 'A'ālihatunā Khayrun 'Am Huwa Mā Đarabūhu Laka 'Illā Jadalāan Bal Hum Qawmun Khaşimūna
And they said: Our gods are better or is he? They only put this forth to argue with you. Indeed, they are a quarrelsome people.

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ لِتَحْكُمَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِمَا أَرَاكَ اللَّهُ وَلاَ تَكُنْ لِلْخَائِنِينَ خَصِيما ً
'Innā 'Anzalnā 'Ilayka Al-Kitāba Bil-Ĥaqqi Litaĥkuma Bayna An-Nāsi Bimā 'Arāka Allāhu Wa Lā Takun Lilkhā'inīna Khaşīmāan
We have revealed to you the Book with the truth that you may judge between the people by that which God has shown you, and do not be an advocate for the treacherous.
16:4
خَلَقَ الإِنسَانَ مِنْ نُطْفَة ٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيم ٌ مُبِين ٌ
Khalaqa Al-'Insāna Min Nuţfatin Fa'idhā Huwa Khaşīmun Mubīnun
He has created man from a seed, but then he becomes clearly in opposition.
36:77
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاه ُُ مِنْ نُطْفَة ٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيم ٌ مُبِين ٌ
'Awalam Yara Al-'Insānu 'Annā Khalaqnāhu Min Nuţfatin Fa'idhā Huwa Khaşīmun Mubīnun
Has man not seen that We have created him from a seed, but he then becomes a clear opponent?

هَذَانِ خَصْمَانِ اخْتَصَمُوا فِي رَبِّهِمْ فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَاب ٌ مِنْ نَار ٍ يُصَبُّ مِنْ فَوْقِ رُءُوسِهِمُ الْحَمِيمُ
Hadhāni Khaşmāni Akhtaşamū Fī Rabbihim Fa-Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Quţţi`at Lahum Thiyābun Min Nārin Yuşabbu Min Fawqi Ru'ūsihimu Al-Ĥamīmu
Here are two opponents who have disputed regarding their Lord; as for those who rejected, outer garments made from fire are cut out for them, and boiling water is poured from above their heads.
38:21
وَهَلْ أَتَاكَ نَبَأُ الْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا الْمِحْرَابَ
Wa Hal 'Atāka Naba'u Al-Khaşmi 'Idh Tasawwarū Al-Miĥrāba
Did the news come to you of the disputing party who came over into the temple enclosure?
38:22
إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَى دَاوُودَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا لاَ تَخَفْ خَصْمَانِ بَغَى بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْض ٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَلاَ تُشْطِطْ وَاهْدِنَا إِلَى سَوَاءِ الصِّرَاطِ
'Idh Dakhalū `Alá Dāwūda Fafazi`a Minhum Qālū Lā Takhaf Khaşmāni Baghá Ba`Đunā `Alá Ba`Đin Fāĥkum Baynanā Bil-Ĥaqqi Wa Lā Tushţiţ Wa Ahdinā 'Ilá Sawā'i Aş-Şirāţi
When they entered upon David, he was startled by them. They said: "Have no fear. We are two who have disputed, and one has wronged the other, so judge between us with the truth, and do not wrong us, and guide us to the right path."

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يُعْجِبُكَ قَوْلُه ُُ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا فِي قَلْبِه ِِ وَهُوَ أَلَدُّ الْخِصَامِ
Wa Mina An-Nāsi Man Yu`jibuka Qawluhu Fī Al-Ĥayāati Ad-Dunyā Wa Yush/hidu Allāha `Alá Mā Fī Qalbihi Wa Huwa 'Aladdu Al-Khişāmi
And from among the people are whose words you admire in this worldly life, but God is witness as to what is in his heart, for he is the worst in opposition.
43:18
أَوَمَنْ يُنَشَّأُ فِي الْحِلْيَةِ وَهُوَ فِي الْخِصَامِ غَيْرُ مُبِين ٍ
'Awaman Yunashsha'u Fī Al-Ĥilyati Wa Huwa Fī Al-Khişāmi Ghayru Mubīnin
What good is an offspring that is brought up to be beautiful, and cannot help in a fight?

'Inna Dhālika Laĥaqqun Takhāşumu 'Ahli An-Nāri
Surely, this is in truth the feuding of the people of Hell.

ذَلِكَ مِنْ أنْبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ~ِ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ يُلْقُونَ أَقْلاَمَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ يَكْفُلُ مَرْيَمَ وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ
Dhālika Min 'Nbā'i Al-Ghaybi Nūĥīhi 'Ilayka Wa Mā Kunta Ladayhim 'Idh Yulqūna 'Aqlāmahum 'Ayyuhum Yakfulu Maryama Wa Mā Kunta Ladayhim 'Idh Yakhtaşimūna
This is from the news of the unseen that We inspire to you. You were not with them when they drew straws as to which one of them will be charged with Mary; you were not with them when they disputed.
26:96
قَالُوا وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ
Qālū Wa Hum Fīhā Yakhtaşimūna
They said, while they were disputing therein:
27:45
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَالِحاً أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ فَإِذَا هُمْ فَرِيقَانِ يَخْتَصِمُونَ
Wa Laqad 'Arsalnā 'Ilá Thamūda 'Akhāhum Şāliĥāan 'Ani A`budū Allāha Fa'idhā Hum Farīqāni Yakhtaşimūna
And We have sent to Thamud their brother Saleh: "You shall serve God." But they became two disputing groups.
36:49
مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلاَّ صَيْحَة ً وَاحِدَة ً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ
Mā Yanžurūna 'Illā Şayĥatan Wāĥidatan Ta'khudhuhum Wa Hum Yakhişşimūna
They will not realize it when one scream overwhelms them, while they dispute.
38:69
مَا كَانَ لِيَ مِنْ عِلْم ٍ بِالْمَلَإِ الأَعْلَى إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ
Mā Kāna Liya Min `Ilmin Bil-Mala'i Al-'A`lá 'Idh Yakhtaşimūna
"I had no knowledge of the command up high, that they had quarreled."
39:31
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ
Thumma 'Innakum Yawma Al-Qiyāmati `Inda Rabbikum Takhtaşimūna
Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will quarrel at your Lord.
50:28
قَالَ لاَ تَخْتَصِمُوا لَدَيَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ بِالْوَعِيدِ
Qāla Lā Takhtaşimū Ladayya Wa Qad Qaddamtu 'Ilaykum Bil-Wa`īdi
He said: Do not argue with each other before Me, I have already presented you with My promise.
