69:1  THE CATASTROPHE
69:2  and what is the Catastrophe
69:3  Would that you knew what the Catastrophe is
69:4  Thamūd and ‘Ād denied the Last Judgement
69:5  By a deafening shout was Thamūd destroyed
69:6  and ‘Ād by a howling, violent gal
69:7  which He let loose on them for seven nights and eight successive days: you might have seen the people lying dead as though they had been hollow trunks of palm-trees
69:8  Can you see even one of them still around
69:9  Pharaoh, and those before him, and the inhabitants of the Ruined Cities, also committed si
69:10  and disobeyed their Lord‘s apostle. With a terrible scourge He smote them
69:11  When the Flood rose high We carried you² in the floating ark
69:12  making it a memorable event, so that all attentive ears might heed it
69:13  When the Trumpet sounds a single blast
69:14  when earth and mountains are raised high and with one mighty crash are flattened into dust ―
69:15  on that day the Dread Event will come to pass
69:16  The sky will be rent asunder on that day, frail and tottering,
69:17  and the angels will stand on every side with eight of them carrying the Throne of your Lord above their heads
69:18  On that day you shall be utterly exposed, and nothing that you hid shall be hidden
69:19  He who is given his book in his right hand will say: ‘Here it is, read my book
69:20  I knew I should come face to face with my account!‘
69:21  His shall be a blissful stat
69:22  in a lofty Garden
69:23  with clusters of fruit within his reach
69:24  Eat and drink to your heart‘s content: your recompense for what you did in days gone by.‘
69:25  But he who is given his book in his left hand will say: ‘Would that I were not given my book
69:26  Would that I knew nothing of my account
69:27  Would that my death had ended all
69:28  Nothing has my wealth availed me
69:29  and bereft am I of all my power.‘
69:30  Lay hold of him and bind him
69:31  Then burn him in the fire of Hell
69:32  and then fasten him with a chain seventy cubits long
69:33  For he did not believe in God, the Most Great
69:34  nor did he care to feed the destitute
69:35  Today he shall be friendless here
69:36  only filth shall be his food
69:37  the filth which only sinners eat.‘
69:38  I swear by all that you can see
69:39  and all that is hidden from your view
69:40  that this is the utterance of a noble messenger
69:41  It is no poet‘s speech: scant is your faith
69:42  It is no soothsayer‘s divination: how little you reflect
69:43  It is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe
69:44  Had he invented lies concerning Us
69:45  We would have seized him by the right han
69:46  and severed his heart‘s vein
69:47  not one of you could have protected him
69:48  It¹ is but an Admonition to the righteous
69:49  We well know that there are some among you who will deny it
69:50  It is the despair of the unbelievers
69:51  It is the indubitable Truth
69:52  Praise, then, the name of your Lord, the Almighty
